Canada’s 6-0 World Cup win over Qatar didn’t end with the kind of relief players usually chase. The mood shifted early in the second half when midfielder Ismael Kone went down after a tackle that triggered a red card for Qatar’s Assim Madibo.

Kone was hurt on the play, taken straight to the hospital, and is set to undergo surgery. From the sideline. Canada’s players and coaches reacted immediately. their anger visible and audible as they challenged what they saw as an unfair call. Some Canada players shoved back at Qatar opponents. while manager Jesse Marsch and his staff could be heard on the broadcast questioning how the incident was called at first.

The sequence drew increasingly harsh attention. The tackle was initially treated as a foul, then upgraded after further review to a red card. Madibo, after the decision, put his hands over his head and waved them in the air, offering an apology for the severity of the tackle from behind.

Trainers moved quickly. After an air cast was put on Kone’s left leg, he was wheeled off on a stretcher while waving toward fans in Vancouver who were chanting his name.

The red card was Qatar’s second sending-off of the match, following Homam Ahmed’s dismissal in the 31st minute. Canada’s response on the field continued anyway: Nathan Saliba replaced Kone in the 56th minute. Saliba scored Canada’s fourth goal eight minutes later from a free kick. then ran to the bench where he was handed a KONE 8 jersey. He held it up as fans cheered the goal.

After the game, Marsch tried to put words to what he witnessed. He said he “could hear the bone snap.” Marsch added that Kone was at the hospital and was set to undergo surgery.

Marsch also described Kone’s value to the team in plain terms. He called Ismael “such a great kid. ” “imperfect. ” and said “that is why we love him.” He said Kone can do things “that no other player can do. ” and that he “embodies a lot of what this team is.” Marsch pointed to the earlier match against Bosnia. saying Kone was Canada’s best player there. He closed with the blunt reality that Kone is “a huge loss. ” adding: “Our hearts are with him. but that kid has a huge future.”.

The coach also said Madibo had apologized to Kone for the tackle.

Kone’s club path has been rapid, but this injury moment is another kind of turning point. Born in the Ivory Coast, Kone moved to Montreal at age seven. He rose through the CF Montreal academy system and debuted with the MLS club in 2021. In 2022, European attention followed quickly, leading to a move to Watford. In 2024, he joined French power Marseille for a reported transfer fee of £15 million ($20m).

After a difficult half season, Kone joined fellow Ligue 1 side Rennes on loan for the rest of 2024-25. He then moved to Italian side Sassoulo on an initial loan that was made permanent in February.

This was his second World Cup. He made his World Cup debut in 2022, just months after his senior international debut in March of that year. Kone is 24 and had just celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, June 16.

Canada, however, faces a roster complication. With Kone injured, Canada is unable to replace him on its roster with a new player. Under World Cup rules for outfield players. any roster replacements had to happen no later than 24 hours before a team’s first match. Goalkeepers can be replaced at any point during the tournament.

The day’s football still moved forward. but for Canada the picture is now dominated by one unanswered question: when Kone leaves the hospital for surgery. how quickly can the team adjust to the absence of a midfielder Marsch described as irreplaceable on the field—especially after an injury severe enough that Marsch said he could hear the bone snap.

  1. How do they upgrade it after it’s already a foul? Like what were they watching, lol. Hope Kone’s okay though.

  2. Not gonna lie, I think Canada players were just mad and started making it worse. If he went down in the second half, isn’t that like late contact? Also why give a jersey after the red card like everything’s fine…

  3. Surgery already?? That’s terrifying. I swear refs always do the “it’s fine… no wait it’s worse” thing after the crowd reacts. And Qatar guy putting hands over head?? that’s basically innocent to me, like he knew it wasn’t that serious at first. Anyway, Vancouver fans chanting his name is sweet, but red cards twice in one match is wild.
