Tornado watch continues until 10 p.m.; offices closed

A tornado warning for Douglas, Piatt and Champaign counties has been lifted, but a tornado watch remains in central Illinois until 10 p.m. A flash flood warning stays in effect until 7:30 p.m., and dozens of government buildings, schools, parks and businesses

The warning lifted at 4:39 p.m. came with a clear message: the storm had weakened below severe limits. But for central Illinois, the threat didn’t disappear—only shifted.

A tornado warning for Douglas, Piatt and Champaign counties has been lifted. The storm that prompted it “has weakened below severe limits” and “no longer appears capable of producing a tornado,” the National Weather Service reported at 4:39 p.m.

Still, a tornado watch remains in effect for central Illinois until 10 p.m. A flash flood warning is also in effect for northern Piatt and northern Champaign counties until 7:30 p.m.

The timing is colliding with daily life across the region after another round of bad weather. Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency said at 2:15 p.m. that a tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m. for 30 counties in central Illinois, including Champaign, Douglas, Piatt and Vermilion.

City services shut down early

In Champaign, city facilities are closing to the public for routine operations starting at 1 p.m. That includes the city building. the Champaign Public Library. the equity and engagement and neighborhood services departments on Park Avenue. and the public works facility. Emergency services will still be available.

The Urbana Free Library will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Urbana City Building will close at noon and is expected to resume normal hours at 8 a.m. Thursday.

State of play at schools, campuses and meetings

Parkland College will close at 2 p.m.; all classes. programs and services are canceled. including all College for Kids programs even when they had earlier start times. The campus is not a public shelter location, college officials said. The board of trustees meetings set for Wednesday will be postponed.

Danville Area Community College is closing its campus at 10:30 a.m. and has canceled all events and classes.

The Urbana Park District is closing all facilities at 5 p.m. and has postponed all evening activities. That includes the district’s Juneteenth celebration, now set for Thursday. Art camp will end at 3 p.m., with no aftercare.

At the Champaign Park District. Sholem Aquatic Center and Prairie Farm will close all day Wednesday. and all other facilities will close at 5:30 p.m. The district has canceled all outdoor sports, tennis programs and evening programming. Park district officials said camp will go until 5:30 p.m. as scheduled, but families are encouraged to pick up their children early if possible.

Outdoor spaces and fairground closures

All Champaign County Forest Preserves and facilities—including the museum of the Grand Prairie and the Lake of the Woods Golf Course—will close at noon.

The Ford County Fair tractor pull set for Wednesday night has been canceled, and the fairgrounds will close at 2 p.m. Further schedule updates will be posted on the fair’s Facebook page, including the status of Thursday night’s tractor pull.

Where residents can go for shelter

In the middle of the disruptions, at least one place is staying open with a clear purpose. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is opening its facility at 201 W. Kenyon Road as a free emergency shelter during the storm.

Residents can enter at the south loading dock, and service animals are allowed. Officials said the shelter will remain operational through 5:00 p.m. If severe weather persists, C-UPHD will remain open until conditions are safe.

“All are welcome,” officials said, and residents are encouraged to bring important documents, medications, phone chargers and any medical equipment they might need.

Today’s clinic is canceled

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District has canceled today’s sexual health clinic.

Business closures spread across towns

The weather is pushing closures into afternoon and evening hours, cutting into routine schedules.

Jarling’s Custard Cup in Champaign will not be open Wednesday. Parcadia is closed today due to the storm. The Caffeine Rx in downtown Champaign is closing at 1 p.m. Mad Goat Coffee is closing all of its shops in Danville and Champaign at 4 p.m. Royal Donut will also close at 4 p.m. in both towns.

And on social media. one doughnut shop framed the shutdown with a little humor meant for people planning around power and outages. The post joked. “Also. you should definitely come grab a box of doughnuts and if you lose power. you’ll still be prepared for breakfast tomorrow morning. ” adding. “That’s just good storm prep right there.”.

A shelter is open, services are shifting, and the watch is still on the clock—until 10 p.m.—as central Illinois braces for what comes next.
