Heather McComb didn’t expect her final conversation with her ex-husband to become part of her wedding story. But in an interview published June 9 with US Weekly. the “Day of Reckoning” actress. 49. recalled what James Van Der Beek told her in the time before his death—after a battle with colorectal cancer that ended on Feb. 11, when he was 48.

McComb said she plans to share the detail she called “beautiful” because it’s the kind of blessing she believes her late ex would have wanted her to feel—right up to her vows with her new husband, Scott Michael Campbell.

She described her last interaction with Van Der Beek and said he blessed her marriage to Campbell. the 54-year-old man she married in May after three years together. McComb said she and her ex “both knew that Scott and I were getting married” and that both James and Kimberly Van Der Beek were “so full of love and support and excitement.”.

“I will share one thing because I think it’s beautiful. James and Kimberly [Van Der Beek] both knew that Scott and I were getting married and they both were so full of love and support and excitement. ” McComb told the outlet. “I know that James would want me to celebrate our love. just like he celebrated the love that he had for Kimberly. which was so beautiful.”.

Her comments also reflected how she views his second marriage. McComb said she has “unparalleled” respect and admiration for Kimberly Van Der Beek, 44, and for the love the pair had. She returned to that theme again, saying she felt James would want the same kind of celebration for her relationship.

“I know that James would want me to celebrate our love, just like he celebrated the love that he had for Kimberly, which was so beautiful,” McComb said.

Van Der Beek and McComb married in 2003 and later separated in 2009. They finalized their divorce by 2010. Van Der Beek then married Kimberly in 2010, and they went on to share six children.

McComb and Campbell tied the knot on May 10. The next day, McComb shared a carousel of photos from their Montana ceremony on Instagram. In a lengthy caption, she wrote: “Our hearts are full and humbled by all of the love that we were surrounded by.”

In the interview, McComb said she believes Van Der Beek was watching over the wedding, and she pointed to specific signs she noticed that day. She described it as feeling “magical” and said she saw a “double rainbow, two ladybugs and two white doves.”

“I know we had a lot of people up in heaven shining on us that day,” she said. “It was magical in the sense that we saw a double rainbow, two ladybugs and two white doves.”

The through-line in McComb’s account is stark: a marriage that began after years of separation is still tied. in her mind. to the family love she says she felt from both Van Der Beek’s first life and his second—now carried forward in the way she remembers his blessing and the symbols she believes followed her to the altar.
