Apple rolls out iOS 27 with faster performance and upgraded Siri

At WWDC 2026, Apple previewed iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 with a clear message: expect fewer headaches, quicker everyday tasks, and a major Siri upgrade—though new AI features will only work on newer iPhones and select iPads.

When Apple rolled through its WWDC 2026 keynote and moved on from last year’s Liquid Glass redesign drama, the pitch for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 still landed with a specific promise: your day-to-day experience should feel smoother, not louder.

Apple said the next versions of its mobile operating systems will roll out to iPhones and iPads later this year, likely in September. The updates focus largely on stability improvements and smaller quality-of-life changes. But the headline feature is unmistakable: an upgraded Siri AI.

For people wondering whether their device will even make it into the update, the answer comes down to model—and, in some cases, to the exact iPad generation details Apple has shifted away from.

iPhone compatibility is straightforward this year. Apple’s typical support window spans six to seven years, and this time iPhones from 2019 and newer will support iOS 27. That includes the iPhone 11 and up, along with the iPhone SE (2nd Gen). If your iPhone already received iOS 26, Apple says it will still be compatible with iOS 27. If you’re unsure which model you have, Apple suggests checking Settings > General > About and looking at the model name.

iPad compatibility is more complicated because Apple retired the “generations” moniker and now uses chipset to denote model. Apple says you can figure out what model iPad you have by heading to the place it links for model identification. It then lists the iPads that are now cut off from the iPadOS 27 update—specifically the 8th-gen iPad from 2020 and the 5th-gen iPad Mini.

Those that will get iPadOS 27 include:
– iPad: 9th gen and later. including A16
– iPad Mini: 6th gen and later. including A17 Pro
– iPad Air 11-inch: 4th gen and later. including M2. M3. and M4
– iPad Air 13-inch: M2 and later
– iPad Pro 11-inch: 2nd gen and later
– iPad Pro 12.9-inch: 4th gen and later
– iPad Pro: M4 and later.

Even if your device can install iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, not every new feature will be available. Apple Intelligence remains restricted. Apple says Apple Intelligence only works on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer, and select iPads, meaning several AI features won’t be available on older devices.

The most consequential update isn’t just that Siri is getting an upgrade—it’s how Apple describes the upgrade itself. Siri is billed as “a more capable assistant. ” powered by Apple’s third-generation foundation models developed from the ground up with help from Google’s Gemini models. Apple also states that it is not using Google’s infrastructure. and that no user data from Siri actions gets shared with Google.

The changes start with how Siri looks and how you can interact with it. Siri now has an all-new look when you activate it, resembling a glass orb. Apple says you can type or talk naturally to Siri. There’s also a dedicated app where you can revisit previous conversations or pick up where you left off on a different device.

Siri’s reach extends into the camera app, too. Apple says Siri is now in the camera app to start visual search more directly, likening the flow to Google Lens. Apple claims you can point the camera at a restaurant bill and have Siri split the tab.

Under the hood, Apple says Siri can understand personal context. It can comb through emails, messages, and photos to find relevant information based on your query. Apple also says Siri can take action on your behalf—drafting an email in a specific tone. or providing wine recommendations for a particular dish. The assistant’s voice is more expressive. and Apple says you can customize the assistant’s voice and adjust its expressiveness and pace.

Then there’s the less glamorous but likely more appreciated work: speed and stability. Apple says app launches are up to 30 percent faster. Newly captured photos in your Photo Library load up to 70 percent faster. AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent faster. Apple also says the iPhone will do a better job of switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular. aiming to reduce the awkward stretch with no service while your device moves networks while you’re out.

Apple notes that many of these upgrades will affect older iPhone models, including the iPhone 11, thanks to a better-optimized CPU Scheduler.

Of course, last year’s Liquid Glass redesign left some users with strong opinions, and Apple didn’t ignore that. Apple says it updated the design language for improved readability and contrast, including sharper app icons. More importantly for people who didn’t like the look. iOS 27 adds a slider in Settings that lets you adjust the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect. from “super clear” to more opaque. The setting can be adjusted in Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass.

Apple also dedicated real time in the keynote to child safety features in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.

There’s a new Setup Assistant for parents to run through when first setting up an Apple device for a child. Apple says it includes choosing what system apps are available to the child and other essential apps. Apple also introduces an “Ask to Browse” feature that sends any new websites kids encounter in Safari to a parent for approval.

Apple says a feature called Communication Safety prevents children from seeing nudity or violence in Messages or FaceTime by blurring those content types by default.

One paragraph that captures the thread through Apple’s presentation is the way the update ties together: iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 are built around stability and speed. and Siri’s capabilities expand into conversation history. camera-based visual search. and context across emails. messages. and photos—while the settings and safety features aim to give adults more control. even as the assistant becomes more hands-on.

  1. Fewer headaches?? Lol Apple always says that. Also if it only works on newer iPhones that’s kinda messed up, my brother’s iPad is like 2 years old and already “unsupported” half the time.

  2. They said iPhones from 2019 and newer, so like my iPhone 11 is good right? Unless they changed the rules again for iPads… I swear iPad model numbers confuse me. I thought Liquid Glass was the big scandal not Siri.

  3. September update, cool. But I don’t get why Siri’s “AI features” need newer hardware if it’s all software. Sounds like planned obsolescence with extra steps. Apple talks about stability but my apps already crash more than Siri does.
