Victor Willis didn’t make it to 75.
Village People announced that the lead singer died on June 30 after what the group described as a “short but aggressive illness. ” with the news shared on July 1. In a post on the group’s Facebook page. Village People wrote. “We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS. lead singer of Village People. ” and asked for privacy.
Willis was 74, dying one day shy of his 75th birthday. As one of Village People’s seven original members, he helped build the disco group during its rise in the 1970s.
He was also a songwriter behind some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Y.M.C.A.,” “In The Navy” and “Macho Man.” For many fans, his stage presence was as recognizable as the songs themselves: Willis often performed with Village People in costume, appearing as a Navy admiral or a police officer.
In the early aughts, Willis had left the group in 1979 to pursue a solo career. He later rejoined Village People in 2017 after a long run of legal battles that reshaped his relationship to the band’s early catalog.
Those disputes included a 2012 copyright case that allowed Willis to terminate rights to some of Village People’s early songs, including “Y.M.C.A.”
In recent years, the group’s music gained fresh momentum at political rallies for President Donald Trump. After Village People and Willis performed at the president’s inaugural festivities in January 2025. the group said in social media posts that they are not a political group and would perform for both Democratic and Republican politicians.
The story of Willis—founder, frontman, and songwriter—threads through Village People’s most famous era and through the battles that determined who could control its legacy.

Short but aggressive illness… I hate seeing that.
Wait so he died and then everyone was like “privacy”?? That’s wild. Also I swear I saw Village People at some Trump thing and thought it was a gimmick, not real life.
The article says he left in 1979 and then rejoined in 2017 after legal battles? So did he get to keep Y.M.C.A. or did the band just steal it back? I’m confused bc I remember hearing different stories about who owned what.
I’m reading this like “Village People founder gone” and then it mentions Trump rallies, like why is politics even in it… but whatever. The fact he died one day before 75 feels kinda messed up timing-wise. I just always thought he was like the Navy guy from the costumes and that’s it, didn’t realize he was behind Macho Man too.
