New York braces as humid heat hits near 100

New York’s – New York is expected to see near-100°F temperatures over the coming days, with humidity making it feel closer to 109°F. The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings and watches as overnight lows offer little relief, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani ur
New York is about to get hit with a kind of heat that doesn’t let go.
In the coming days, temperatures in the city are expected to rise to near 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). With humidity layered on top. conditions could feel like roughly 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius)—not the dry. desert-style kind of heat. but the sticky kind that clings. Other cities across the eastern US. from Detroit to Washington. DC. to Boston. are also expected to run about 20 degrees Fahrenheit above normal as a holiday weekend approaches.
It won’t reach Phoenix levels, but this is still dangerous. The problem isn’t just discomfort. Humidity makes it harder for the body to cool itself because it interferes with sweating. one of the body’s most important tools for regulating temperature. Sweat typically cools by evaporating into the air—but that evaporation becomes less effective when the air is already packed with moisture. “When there’s high humidity. especially in a heat wave. it’s much more difficult for the body to physiologically cool off. ” said Richard Allan. a climate scientist at the University of Reading.
The National Weather Service has already put out a patchwork of warnings and watches. shown as reds and pinks on its map. Daytime highs are set to be severe. But the overnight temperatures are where the forecast turns more alarming. “Several days in a row of hot temperatures with little relief from overnight low temperatures can increase heat stress on the human body. ” the NWS warned in its forecast.
New York’s mayor. Zohran Mamdani. leaned into that urgency. writing in a social post that New Yorkers should come up with a heat plan. First, he said, that means finding access to air conditioning. Then it’s about people—checking on neighbors and on anyone with illnesses that could make them more vulnerable to heat-related health issues.
This blast arrives about a week after Europe endured record-shattering temperatures, including blistering heat and high humidity in late May. Burning fossil fuels is one reason heat waves are intensifying, according to Allan. “The warming from rising greenhouse gases is clearly adding to global temperature. and that adds extra heat to the heat waves. ” he said. “It promotes moderate heat to become extreme heat … These humid conditions may be more likely to be promoted into a hot. humid heat wave rather than just humid and warm.”.
Another factor could be El Niño. a natural climate phenomenon that forms every few years in the tropical Pacific and affects weather around the world. It has been declared earlier this month and is expected to be particularly potent, strengthening as summer goes on. That process is forecast to help boost temperatures across the northern tier of the US and parts of Canada.
For New York. the forecast spells out a simple reality: the air is expected to warm fast. and the night may not cool things enough. In the language of the body, that’s when heat stress builds. In the language of a city preparing for a holiday weekend. it’s the difference between stepping outside and coming back safely—before the humid heat hardens into something people can’t easily shake.

So is this like those heat domes everyone talks about?
Feels like they just say “humid heat” every summer and it never changes. My cousin says you can just drink coffee and it’ll keep you cool lol. Either way I’m not going outside.
Wait the mayor is named Zohran Mamdani? I’m confused cause I swear I saw something about NYC being run by Adams. Also if it’s “only” near 100 then people are acting dramatic, like it’s not Phoenix levels right?
The ‘feel like 109’ thing is always such a joke until you’re literally sweating standing still. Overnight not dropping is probably what gets people. They say humidity messes with sweating, but I thought sweating was the point? also why is it holiday weekend too, like of course it is.
