A Yankees–Red Sox game on NBC rarely gets pushed around. Especially not for golf.
But Sunday night, the matchup had to yield—first to weather at the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship and then to what Scottie Scheffler did once play resumed at TPC River Highlands.
The decision came after rain delay coverage at the tournament. with an NBC Sports spokesman saying the call was made in consultation with the PGA Tour and Major League Baseball. NBC would stick with the Travelers Championship once it restarted at 7:20 p.m. EST, continuing through the conclusion or until it was suspended due to darkness.
That mattered because Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, was still in contention. On the 18th hole, he rolled in an 8-foot par putt to force a sudden-death playoff against Viktor Hovland on Monday morning. Tournament officials determined there was not enough daylight to start the playoff.
The final round was stopped for 90 minutes as storms moved over TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. NBC also aired the conclusion of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. after the start of the final round of the third women’s major of the year in Chaska. Minnesota. was delayed 3 1/2 hours due to rain. Haeran Ryu won by two strokes for her first major title.
While golf dominated the schedule, baseball didn’t disappear entirely. The Yankees–Red Sox game was also streamed on Peacock. NBC picked up coverage at 8:28 p.m. during the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Red Sox were leading 2-0.
NBC viewers still got to see Boston’s Sonny Gray carry a no-hitter through seven innings. In the eighth inning, the Yankees’ Amed Rosario ended it with a single with one out, though Gray exited after giving up the hit.
It was also a milestone for the network: this was NBC’s first season carrying “Sunday Night Baseball.” And the Yankees–Red Sox meeting was the first on NBC since Sept. 8, 1995.
