Olivia Wilde used to think about beauty standards as an actress. Now, she says, she thinks about them as a director—every day, in the casting room.
On Friday’s episode of “The Run-Through with Vogue. ” Wilde. 42. said becoming a director changed the way she viewed Hollywood’s beauty standards. “It’s interesting because as a director. I now am constantly searching for actresses who can still move their faces. and it’s not easy. ” she told Vogue’s head of editorial content Chloe Malle.
Wilde said she doesn’t blame performers for pursuing cosmetic procedures. “I am a product of the same machine. I am under the same pressures. I get it,” she said. Still, she hopes the beauty industry will develop less aggressive anti-aging treatments than those currently available. “There’s something so medieval about a lot of these things,” she added.
Her concern wasn’t only aesthetic. Wilde described the performance tradeoff that comes when appearance gets treated like a requirement for work. “Female actors face an impossible balancing act between preserving their ability to perform and meeting Hollywood’s expectations around aging,” she said.
She also spoke to the cruelty of that balancing act. “I’ve had the thing of people being like, ‘She looks old and dead and awful.’ And you’re like, ‘Fuck! How do you win? It’s impossible,’” Wilde said.
That “how do you win” feeling lands with extra weight when other performers describe similar pressures from different angles. In June 2025. “White Lotus” star Carrie Coon said she is often typecast as older women despite being in her early 40s. “My voice is lower, and I don’t have Botox, so I tend to play older than I am. And so I’ve always had a gravitas or some authority,” Coon said.
Nikki Glaser, speaking in April, framed the pressure in financial terms—once procedures are reachable, refusing them can start to feel like a personal failure. “It’s like that failure that you feel of anything that you could do that you’re not doing,” Glaser said.
Wilde’s remarks put the issue in a blunt business reality: casting decisions depend on what a director believes an actor can still do—physically and emotionally—on screen. When “moving their faces” becomes harder to find. the industry’s beauty standards stop being a background cultural debate and start shaping what stories get told and who is allowed to carry them.
For Wilde, the goal isn’t to police what actors choose. It’s to push for treatments that don’t trade away expression, while acknowledging that the system exerts pressure on women long before they even walk onto set.

Man, this is exactly why I don’t trust anything in Hollywood. They say they “get it” then still cast the same people and complain. Like how is an actress supposed to win if one day it’s ‘look young’ and next day it’s ‘you changed your face too much’?
