Mamdani lays out Knicks parade route to City Hall

Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed fresh details for Thursday’s Knicks ticker-tape parade, including a 10 a.m. start near Battery Park, the route through Broadway and the Canyon of Heroes, and a City Hall Plaza celebration immediately afterward.

There’s a moment New York fans know well—when the joy is so loud it makes you hold your breath anyway. Mayor Zohran Mamdani admitted he tried not to “jinx it” as he talked about Thursday’s Knicks ticker-tape parade, fresh off the franchise’s first title in 53 years.

The parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. near Battery Park. From there, it will travel north along Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes before concluding at City Hall. Immediately after the parade. Mamdani will host a championship celebration and a Key to the City ceremony on the City Hall Plaza.

“As a fan, I haven’t wanted to jinx it, but as the mayor, we’ve been preparing for all these logistics,” Mamdani told ABC 7.

He also tied the moment to what the city is always trying to prove about itself. The Knicks, he said, “reflect the never-give-up spirit of the city.”

Mamdani pointed to the way New York sometimes gathers strength. “I was reading a piece this morning that wrote about often times in our city’s history, this kind of unity comes in a moment of tragedy, and it’s so beautiful that this unity is coming from a moment of joy,” he said.

Beyond the parade route. Mamdani previously announced that City Hall and municipal buildings across the city will be illuminated in blue and orange on the night of Thursday. June 18 in recognition of the victory. Buildings already confirmed to be lit include the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street and Brooklyn Borough Hall at 209 Joralemon Street. Additional city buildings may also participate in the tribute.

For fans, the big headline is the rarity: the celebration will mark the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history—one that begins at Battery Park, cuts through Broadway’s most symbolic stretch, and ends at City Hall, where the city’s welcome is formalized with a Key to the City ceremony.

  1. 10 a.m. near Battery Park? so like, can regular people just show up or is it all blocked off?

  2. I don’t get why they “jinx” it lol it’s already happened, the Knicks won. Also blue and orange lights sounds cool but aren’t they gonna mess up traffic again on Broadway?

  3. Wait the parade is through the Canyon of Heroes right? Isn’t that like for the Yankees or Rangers or whatever? I might be mixing it up but NYC uses the same phrases for everything. Also “Key to the City” is just a photo op right?

  4. So they’re illuminating municipal buildings “blue and orange” like it’s a holiday. But doesn’t the city already have stuff lit up all the time? I love the Knicks but I’m confused—first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history but they say “fresh details” like we didn’t know any of this. And June 18, is that the same as Thursday or they just mean Thursday is June 18? Either way people are gonna be walking into the street.
