JD Vance answers $8 dress storm over White House image

Vice President JD Vance weighed in on a viral moment sparked by his wife Usha Vance’s $8.75 Old Navy maternity dress, turning a family-pregnancy post into a broader fight over politics and image inside the Trump administration. The debate followed a New York T

Vice President JD Vance didn’t just scroll past the online firestorm around his wife’s maternity dress—he answered it directly, and with a line that made the point before the receipts even mattered.

“She bought a $50 dress for $8.75,” Vance wrote in a June 25 post on X, replying to Usha Vance’s earlier message that included the purchase receipt. He added: “America: meet your next director of the federal budget!”

Usha Vance, who is expecting her fourth child—a boy due in July—had shared a photo of an $8.75 Old Navy maternity dress, which quickly became a national debate.

A New York Times fashion critic. Vanessa Friedman. had written about the “Politics and Power of the Pregnancy Image. ” arguing that the visible pregnancies of MAGA women—including Usha Vance. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s wife. Katie Miller—have been thrust into the center of public attention. Friedman said the pregnancies have helped create a “notably consistent. and somewhat paradigm-shifting. picture of the White House’s family and fertility platform.”.

In Friedman’s account, Usha Vance’s role also mattered: she described the second lady’s job as one to “represent and humanize the vice president,” adding that by spotlighting her pregnancy, she was “doing exactly that.”

Usha Vance had already put the dress on display before the controversy reached peak volume. She wore it in a Father’s Day special episode of “Storytime with the Second Lady,” released June 21, where JD Vance read stories from “Winnie the Pooh.”

The New York Times piece then pushed the discussion from clothing and timing into politics and symbolism. Usha Vance responded with a clear challenge to the framing. “Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy. can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!” she wrote in a June 24 post on X.

“In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady,” she added.

She later posted the receipt. The dress originally retailed for $44.99 before being marked down to $12.49, and an additional coupon brought the final price to $8.75. Old Navy no longer lists the dress on its website, and it appeared to be sold out.

New York Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander said in an email on June 25 that the outlet was “glad the Second Lady had a chance to read The Times’s reporting on fashion and pregnancy. which presented a fair and illuminating analysis of women in the Trump administration and their ownership of motherhood and image.”.

The sequence tightened the focus on one question: was the dress simply a family moment, or part of something larger that critics believe the administration wants to project?

Even as the argument spread online, Usha Vance moved back into public view. On Thursday, June 25, a day after the social media debate erupted, she was spotted at a World Cup football match between Turkey and the U.S. at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood. She attended with her son Ewan Vance.

For the match, Usha Vance wore a blue and white dress. The U.S. men’s national team lost 3-2. But the result didn’t change the stakes on the field because the USMNT had already advanced as group winner before the match, and Turkey was already eliminated.
