Tommy Pham is getting another door to open in Philadelphia—but this time, the timing comes with a deadline.

The Phillies have reportedly signed the veteran outfielder to a minor league contract, with the arrangement including a July 25 opt-out. Pham. 38. spent 2025 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and has already lived through a fast-moving stretch this year: he landed a deal with the New York Mets early in the season. appeared in nine big league games with the Mets. and then was designated for assignment before ultimately electing free agency.

Phạm didn’t wait long to find the next stop. He later signed with the Baltimore Orioles, but he did not appear in any big league games for the club and was eventually released.

Now, Philadelphia is giving him another opportunity. Whether it turns into a promotion to the majors before July 25 remains uncertain, and nothing is guaranteed—even with the Phillies looking for more support in the outfield.

The Phillies’ offense has struggled beyond key contributors including Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh. With the roster needing answers, Pham’s experience could prove useful, at minimum providing additional depth. He also enters this chapter with a proven track record from his time in MLB. including seasons that put his name among the league’s more productive veteran outfielders.

For Philadelphia. the timing of this move adds another layer: the Phillies are currently playing Pham’s former team. the Mets. Philadelphia sits at 46-36 overall. After trailing the Atlanta Braves by a significant margin earlier in the season. the Phillies have narrowed the gap and are now four games back of first place in the National League East standings.

The opt-out date is the catch that keeps the situation from being purely celebratory. Pham will get his shot with the Phillies organization, but the clock is already running—one that could decide how long this opportunity stays in the minors, or whether it becomes an MLB chance before July 25.
