Guardians outpitch Phillies as AL Central lead widens

For three straight games, the Cleveland Guardians made it feel like the Phillies kept reaching for the same wall—and kept finding nothing on the other side.
Cleveland outpitched Philadelphia in a tightly contested three-game series in which their starting pitchers held the Phillies’ sluggers to three runs in 18 ⅔ innings. The sequence started with Gavin Williams’ 11 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings Friday and ended with Patrick Messick’s 5 ⅔ shutout innings Sunday as the Guardians won the series and zoomed to No. 7 in the power rankings.
The rotation that powered that run isn’t just surviving—it’s functioning at a top-of-the-league level. Guardians starters rank sixth in the majors with a 3.46 rotation ERA. They’re also second in innings pitched with 307 IP trailing only Seattle. a workload that matters in a bullpen where closer Cade Smith has nailed down 18 of 20 save chances.
When the pitching stayed sharp, Cleveland didn’t need an explosive reset on offense to keep moving. “Sprinkle in just a dash of timely offense,” and the Guardians won 11 of 13, establishing a 4 1/2 game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central.
The pitching-to-lead pattern is visible in the numbers already in play: a staff that is keeping opponents to three runs over 18 ⅔ innings. a rotation posting a 3.46 ERA while throwing 307 IP. and a late-inning unit led by Cade Smith converting 18 of 20 save chances. Put together, it’s a kind of steadiness that tends to turn “good weeks” into separation.
The standings story is still being written across the rest of the league, but Cleveland’s central control has a clear, recent finish line: quieting Philadelphia, continuing a run of momentum, and climbing to No. 7 in the power rankings after the three-game series win.

So like… Phillies just couldn’t hit at all? Sounds like a pitching issue.
Gavin Williams 11 strikeouts is wild. But also why is it always “tight” games with Cleveland lol, do they ever score big?
I mean 3 runs in 18 ⅔ innings?? That’s basically nothing. Also Cade Smith has 18 of 20 saves so I’m pretty sure he’s like automatic, not even a closer anymore he’s just a cheat code.
Power rankings to No. 7 already?? That seems too high for the Guardians, like wait til playoffs where it matters. And isn’t Messick like a reliever not a starter? Either way the Phillies should’ve adjusted sooner.
