Dolan vs. Mamdani erupts, Knicks Game 4 watch party canceled

When New York Knicks fans looked for a place to celebrate Game 4 outside Madison Square Garden, the plan was gone hours before tipoff. The cancellation didn’t just change where people would gather—it sparked a public clash between the arena’s owner and City Hall.

On June 10. Mayor Zohran Mamdani officially announced the watch party outside Madison Square Garden for Game 4 was canceled. blaming James Dolan in a post on X. Dolan’s Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. responded the same day. saying the Knicks never agreed to what the city proposed and arguing the party wasn’t “canceled in the traditional cense. ” but that city restrictions would prevent it from happening.

The dispute played out in the open across multiple channels. starting with the city’s decision and spreading into Dolan’s radio appearance. Dolan took to WFAN’s Craig Carton Show to blast Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. calling it a “police state” around the Garden. He said getting into MSG was harder than accessing Area 51 and accused city officials of trying to kill the fan celebration.

MSG Sports. the company led by Dolan that owns the Knicks and their arena. released its own June 10 statement attacking the city’s approach. It called the watch party permit granted by Mamdani’s New York City administration “disingenuous at best. ” pointing to conditions that included not allowing more than 1. 000 spectators and requiring attendees to have a ticket to enter.

“But more important is the Mayor’s plan to freeze out fans from celebrating outside Madison Square Garden,” the MSG Sports statement read. “which will turn the streets around MSG into a police state.”

The NYPD pushed back later on June 10, saying MSG’s permit application only requested an event for 500 to 1,000 people and that the city granted the maximum that MSG asked for.

The fight also carried a sharper edge: MSG Sports accused the city of repeating security measures from Game 3. In its statement. MSG accused Mamdani and Tisch of keeping the same “frozen zone” security from Game 3 in place for Game 4. MSG said the restrictions were “supposedly to thwart any threats related to” the Game 3 attendance of President Donald Trump.

“We now know these restrictions were never about the President,” the MSG statement said.

Dolan personally invited Trump to Game 3. As with other presidential visits to Manhattan. Trump’s arrival and heightened security created major inconveniences for people in the area. The timing of Game 4 made that lingering sense of disruption hard to ignore. especially for fans who had expected a return to normal after the presidential visit.

Mamdani had signaled a different outcome just days earlier. On June 9. Mamdani announced on X that the city approved a “ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4.” In the post. he wrote: “As we prepare to watch together. let me be clear: this is a historic. joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly. Knicks in 5.”.

That optimism cracked quickly after Game 3 and the arrests that followed watch-party chaos.

More than two dozen people were arrested, and an NYPD officer was assaulted after a watch party outside Madison Square Garden following the Knicks’ Game 2 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals on June 5.

For Game 3, the outside watch party around Madison Square Garden was canceled due to security protocols for Trump’s attendance. But a Game 3 watch party hosted by New York City at nearby Bryant Park ended with at least eight people arrested, according to multiple reports.

On June 10, the NYPD said the same secure zone and security fencing around Madison Square Garden for Game 3 remains in place for Game 4. The department encouraged fans to arrive early and leave bags at home for Game 4.

“This is not about watch parties, it’s about celebrating wins,” MSG Sports said in its statement. “Issues that happened at the Mayor’s Bryant Park watch party (a city-run watch party) are not related to blocks around MSG nor any other previously run MSG watch party.”

The temperature of the dispute had already been rising. MSG Sports previously referred to Mamdani and NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as “party poopers” in a June 9 press release that blasted the decision to limit the number of fans who could attend the Game 4 watch party outside the Garden.

Mamdani and Tisch have defended the security protocols for Game 4 near the arena. saying they are in line with other major events like New Year’s Eve and July 4. Mamdani attended Game 3 and told reporters he bought a ticket in the nosebleeds to the first NBA Finals game hosted by the Knicks since 1999 for nearly $1. 000.

As Dolan and Mamdani traded accusations, MSG Sports said other cities managed comparable celebrations. The Knicks ownership group noted on June 10 that Oklahoma City. Boston. Denver and Toronto have each successfully hosted major celebrations and NBA Finals watch parties around their arenas in recent years with only minor incidents.

“If the Mayor won’t allow that, can he at least give Knicks fans an honest answer of why not?” the MSG Sports statement concluded. “He can’t blame it on the President. He is not coming to Game 4 and there is no reason to create a police state around The Garden.”

When asked about being called “party poopers” by MSG, Mamdani emphasized safety and the city’s economic boom from the Knicks run. Mamdani did not address the president’s visit.

Dolan, however, focused on Trump during his WFAN interview. He defended Trump against viral footage that appeared to show him asleep in Dolan’s suite during Game 3, saying, “We were talking the whole time.”

Dolan and Trump have a long personal relationship. Dolan married his wife at Mar-a-Lago resort and has contributed to Trump’s political campaigns.
