Broncos promote Davis Webb, Courtland Sutton praises mind

Broncos promote – Davis Webb has been promoted by the Denver Broncos from QB coach to offensive coordinator, and Courtland Sutton immediately put the first-season expectations in emotional, glowing terms after OTAs.

The Denver Broncos were a win away from the Super Bowl a season ago. yet Sean Payton still pushed for change this offseason. To keep the offense from settling into old habits. Payton replaced offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi with QB coach Davis Webb. betting that a different offensive look could spark a sharper unit next season.

Webb’s promotion didn’t arrive out of nowhere. He had been a hot offensive coordinator candidate around the league, and Denver moved to keep him around by elevating him to the top offensive spot.

Webb has been on the Broncos’ staff since 2023, so the veteran players already know how he thinks. That familiarity turned into public praise on Thursday at OTAs, when Courtland Sutton described Webb’s approach in vivid, insider terms.

Sutton called Webb a “mad scientist” on the offensive side, saying he spent the last three years learning under Payton, who he described as an offensive genius. Sutton said that time gave Webb a chance to master the offense Denver has been putting together.

“He spent the last three years now being able to learn the game under Coach Payton. who we all know is an offensive genius. Has one of the best offensive minds. To be able to have that amount of time to be able to learn the game from someone as talented and as special as Coach Payton. it’s ultimately allowed him to be able to master this offense that he’s been able to put together. ” Sutton said.

Sutton also tied Webb’s progress to both coaching and experience from his own playing and coaching career, and he finished with a blunt message about readiness.

“It’s a combination of things that he’s learned from Coach Payton and things that he’s liked and seen from his own experience of playing and coaching in this league. I know that he’s ready. There’s not a thought behind it, I know that he’s ready.”

Payton and the Broncos are hoping the promotion translates into more consistency after an up-and-down 2025 season that nearly cost them multiple games. With the offense already getting additional pieces, the stakes are higher for Denver’s play-calling to start clicking quickly.

One of the new weapons in the mix is former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. With Waddle now in the picture, Webb and Bo Nix have even more to work with as the team prepares for 2026.

Whether Sutton’s confidence becomes results on the field remains the question. But for now, the message from the Broncos’ building is clear: the first offseason under the new structure is being treated like a real opportunity for the offense to take off—this time, with Webb fully in control.
