PHOENIX — Corbin Burnes had a rehab path mapped out: a rehab assignment beginning Friday, then a return to the Arizona Diamondbacks in July for the first time in 13 months.

On Thursday, the plan wasn’t just delayed—it was upended. The former Cy Young winner. who signed the richest contract in Arizona Diamondbacks history at six years and $210 million. had his Tommy John surgery recovery paused for at least another two months after an MRI revealed a teres major/lat strain in his right shoulder.

Instead of stepping into the rotation for the pennant stretch and leading the Diamondbacks into the postseason, Burnes found himself back at home, dealing with another wait—talking about changing diapers and making his kids’ lunch—while hoping he can return by the end of the season.

“It’s obviously frustrating,” Burnes said. “Your team’s playing good baseball, you want to get back and have as much of an impact as you can. … It’s tough to have put in work for 11 months and you’re a little over a month away from being back. It sucks.”
