Yamal’s sprint for history at 2026 World Cup

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup expanding to 48 teams across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, an 18-year-old Barcelona winger—Lamine Yamal—has emerged as the player most likely to challenge Thomas Müller’s long-standing 16-year World Cup record for the youn
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off with a new scale and a new kind of pressure: 48 teams. 16 cities. 104 matches. and a run from June 11 to July 19—more games than Qatar 2022 and a prize fund up 50% from the last edition. The opener is set for Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. while the final arrives at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
For fans who care about records, the timing is almost cruelly neat. Thomas Müller’s World Cup record for the youngest Golden Boot winner has stood for 16 years. Müller was just 20 when he won the award in 2010 at South Africa. scoring five goals as Germany finished third and claimed both the Golden Boot and Best Young Player award in the same tournament.
Now comes Lamine Yamal.
The 18-year-old Barcelona winger—already being spoken about as the best young player on the planet—has been linked directly to Müller’s benchmark. On Thursday. June 4. ESPN’s Roberto Rojas published a deep dive into World Cup records most likely to fall in 2026 and predicted Yamal could be the one to break Müller’s record.
Rojas wrote that after helping Spain win Euro 2024, Yamal enters the World Cup as a face of the next generation. He added that if Spain makes a deep run, Yamal could find himself in contention not only for the Golden Boot but also for multiple individual awards before he even turns 20.
This is a spotlight built on credibility, not hype. Yamal emerged from Barcelona’s La Masia academy and became one of the youngest players ever to debut for the club. He has already collected major trophies: three La Liga titles. a Copa del Rey. two Spanish Super Cups. and the UEFA Euro 2024 championship with Spain. He was named Young Player of Euro 2024. won the Kopa Trophy as the world’s top under-21 player. and was the runner-up for the Ballon d’Or in 2025. He was also named La Liga Player of the Season. becoming the youngest winner of the award after contributing 16 league goals and 11 assists across 26 starts.
But the calendar doesn’t care about resumes, and the body always gets the final vote.
Yamal’s potential obstacle is health. He injured his hamstring converting a penalty for Barcelona on April 22 and missed the rest of the season with the club. Even so, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has said recently he expects Yamal to be ready for Spain’s World Cup opener on June 15.
Spain’s path begins in Group H. where the draw has been described as manageable: Cape Verde. Saudi Arabia. and Uruguay. Spain opens against Cape Verde on June 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET. The next match is against Saudi Arabia on June 21 at 12:00 p.m. ET in Atlanta again. Spain closes group play against Uruguay in Zapopan, Mexico, on June 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
If Yamal is fit enough to get minutes and pick up where he left off before the injury. the knockout bracket—and the Golden Boot conversation—could arrive quickly. There’s also the kind of detail that record chasers live for: Yamal won’t turn 19 until July 13. That means. if he claims the Golden Boot in 2026. he would break Müller’s record by nearly two full years.

So Yamal’s gonna beat Müller’s record? I don’t even watch World Cup but that sounds wild.
Why do they need 48 teams now? Like more matches doesn’t mean more good soccer. Also 16 years for a record feels like it should’ve been broken already.
Wait Müller’s record is youngest Golden Boot winner right? I thought Golden Boot was like top scorer for the whole thing, not best young player. ESPN always does these “most likely” lists and then someone random gets hot for 2 games.
MetLife Stadium for the final is gonna be insane. But June 11 to July 19 is like longer than people realize, so records are basically gonna be easier to break because everyone plays more. Either that or Yamal’s gonna come out and score 5 again and everyone will pretend they called it.
