For the remainder of the NBA Finals, one courtside presence will be missing after the league determined a fan’s behavior crossed a line with Jalen Brunson.

An NBA spokesperson said the fan who verbally harassed Knicks star point guard Jalen Brunson during Wednesday’s Game 1 will be banned from sitting in courtside seats for the rest of the NBA Finals. The spokesperson added that the fan was not a season ticket holder. and if he attended another game in this series. he would not be permitted to sit in courtside seats.

The decision comes as the NBA investigated what happened late in the fourth quarter of Game 1. when Brunson appeared upset while Knicks forward OG Anunoby was shooting free throws. During that stretch. the investigation centered on an interaction between Brunson and courtside fans. along with a visible exchange Brunson was having with referee Scott Foster. the crew chief for Game 1’s officials. Brunson did not address the incident when he spoke to reporters after the Knicks’ 105-95 victory.

This latest punishment arrived after the NBA announced lifetime bans tied to the same Game 1 at Frost Bank Center. One lifetime ban was for a fan who ran onto the court during the fourth quarter, and another lifetime ban was announced for an individual involved in that incident.

The NBA has made fan conduct a priority in recent years. In an October memo to all 30 teams, the league said, “It is critical that teams and arenas vigorously enforce the Code of Conduct and not tolerate any misconduct that impacts our players, fans, or otherwise disrupts the game.”

The Knicks now turn quickly to Game 2, where they will try to take a 2-0 lead against the Spurs when the teams meet on Friday night.

  1. I don’t even know what he said, but courtside should come with rules. Guessing the NBA finally got serious.

  2. Wait Scott Foster was involved and people are just acting like it’s normal? If Brunson was upset during free throws that’s usually on the call, right? Sounds like they’re blaming the fan but not the refs.

  3. Lifetimes bans for one game is wild. Like I thought “courtside” was basically free speech with money. Also the article says he wasn’t a season ticket holder so how did he even get in there… seems weird.
