Wyndham Clark’s lead meets gusty Saturday conditions at Shinnecock

The third round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills tees off Saturday, June 20 at 9 a.m. ET with stiff, gusty winds and uncertainty already shaped by heavy fog earlier in the week. Wyndham Clark holds a four-stroke lead heading into play and says his best gol

The U.S. Open’s third round at Shinnecock Hills is set to begin Saturday, June 20 at 9 a.m. ET, and the forecast reads like a warning label for anyone chasing Wyndham Clark.

Clark enters the weekend with a four-stroke lead after the second round was completed on Friday, June 19. He’s also made it clear he doesn’t think he’s peaked yet—saying he hasn’t played his best golf yet. For the rest of the field. it turns the usual chase into something sharper: if the leader’s best is still coming. every misstep can feel permanent.

The course itself has a way of making even prepared game plans wobble. Shinnecock Hills, on Long Island, New York, is known for unpredictable weather, and this year’s championship has already been tugged around by it. The first round was delayed on Thursday, June 18 due to heavy fog.

Saturday’s weather adds another layer of volatility. Per AccuWeather, the third round is expected to bring stiff winds with plenty of sunshine, with gusty winds continuing to pose problems for golfers. Temperatures are forecast to reach 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

That atmosphere arrives with the field already thinned. Four recent U.S. Open champions missed the cut: Brooks Koepka (2017, 2018), John Rahm (2021), Bryson DeChambeau (2024) and J.J. Spaun (2025). Also eliminated early were Viktor Hovland, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed.

Shinnecock Hills also carries the weight of history. This is the sixth time the U.S. Open has been played at the William Flynn-designed course, which is designed to incorporate natural elements. The tournament was previously held there in 1896, 1986, 1995, 2004, and 2018, when Koepka won his second consecutive U.S. Open title.

As the championship moves from Friday’s scoring into Saturday’s wind, the layout and the weather are working from the same script: keep the margins tight, keep decisions messy, and make momentum hard to sustain.

  1. All that fog earlier in the week and now winds… sounds like the course is just trying to sabotage everybody. Meanwhile Clark says he hasn’t played his best yet, okay sure. Four-stroke lead doesn’t mean anything if the wind starts swinging.

  2. Wait, Brooks Koepka missed the cut?? I thought he literally only wins majors. This article makes it sound like the weather is why but also like the course is “unpredictable” every year. So which is it, wind or bad luck.

  3. Shinnecock Hills is known for weird weather, but they said 79 degrees and sunny, so why is it “a warning label”? Seems like they’re hyping it. Also, four champions missed the cut… that’s kinda wild. I don’t even watch golf that much but I swear the announcers always act like the wind is some magical force of nature.
