Ronaldinho returns to Ravenna, but won’t play

Ronaldinho signs – Ronaldinho has signed for Serie C club Ravenna, returning to football after retiring in 2015. The 46-year-old Brazilian World Cup winner will be unveiled in Miami next week, but Ravenna’s honorary vice president Ariedo Braida confirmed he will take on a market

Ronaldinho’s football comeback has landed with a twist: he’s back in the sport, but not in the way Ravenna fans will have hoped.

The 46-year-old Brazil icon has signed for third-tier Italian club Ravenna—11 years after he retired following a short stint with Fluminense in 2015. The news stunned the football world, even as it became clear he won’t be lacing up his boots again. Instead. Ronaldinho is set to undertake a marketing role with the club after agreeing what Ravenna describes as a major coup.

He will be officially unveiled at an event in Miami next week. and he didn’t hide his feelings about returning to a football setting. Ronaldinho teased the move with the message: “New colours, same smile. I can’t wait to get back to dancing on the ball and write a new story together with Ignazio and the entire Cipriani family.” He added: “Football has always been a source of joy for me. and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”.

For Ravenna, the signing carries symbolism as much as it does marketing power. But Braida moved quickly to end any lingering uncertainty about a player-role switch. The club’s honorary vice president Ariedo Braida confirmed Ronaldinho will do marketing work with them. yet “won’t play for Ravenna in Serie C next season. ” explicitly tying the decision to age.

“Ronaldinho will do a marketing event with us. but he won’t play for Ravenna in Serie C next season. ” Braida said. “I wish he were still able to play. Dinho was a phenomenon and was a wonderful player. I have a beautiful relationship with him from the Milan days, but he won’t play in Serie C with us.”.

The comments had been building pressure for days. Before Ravenna’s confirmation, Braida’s side had already sent tongues wagging over the possibility of involvement on the pitch. In an interview with Italian outlet ANSA last week, Ronaldinho also refused to rule out a return. He described himself as “a timeless champion. ” saying he had signed with Ravenna and calling it “an extraordinary coup.” Then he left the door open: “Over the next few days. there will be an event to unveil this extraordinary character. Will he play?. We’ll see, but it’s not ruled out. As I already said, he is a timeless champion.”.

That tension—between what Ronaldinho teased and what Ravenna has now clarified—sits at the heart of the surprise. The deal is real, the unveiling is set, and the marketing role is locked in. What won’t happen is a Serie C comeback on the matchday pitch at 46.

Ronaldinho’s career achievements explain why the idea of him returning to play still felt irresistible even as the reality shifted. He won the World Cup. a Champions League. two LaLiga titles and a Serie A trophy before retiring after his brief Fluminense spell in 2015. He also collected major individual awards including the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

At the moment, he is still in the middle of Brazil’s World Cup campaign. Ronaldinho is in the United States cheering on Brazil, having last watched Carlo Ancelotti’s side defeat Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia.

For Ravenna, the story is now about what kind of “return” is possible—dancing, smiling, and writing a “new story” from the outside of the pitch. For fans hoping for one more miracle stride into a match, the answer is clearer than the headlines: Ronaldinho will be there, but not to play.

  1. I saw “Ronaldinho returns” and got excited for a sec, then it’s like… marketing role? That’s kinda sad honestly. Dude’s 46 too, I guess.

  2. Wait, didn’t he retire in 2015? Now he’s in Serie C but not playing, so is this like a coach thing or just appearances? Also “dancing on the ball” sounds way different if he’s not on the field lol.

  3. This sounds like they’re using his name to sell tickets/merch, not really bringing him back. Miami unveiling?? sounds more like a publicity stunt than football. I don’t blame him but fans are gonna be mad.
