DELAND, Fla. — Hours after an elderly man stopped into a Walmart convenience store on South Woodland Boulevard to claim what he believed was a $2,700 Florida Lottery win, something didn’t add up.

He had the prize ticket. What he didn’t have was the receipt he needed to redeem it.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the incident began Sunday morning when the man visited the store to claim winnings from a Florida Lottery ticket. Investigators said the cashier on duty, 40-year-old Tameka Hall, provided the customer with instructions on how to claim the money.

Then, later that day, the man realized he never received the required receipt. He returned to the store and reported the problem to management.

Deputies said the store manager reviewed surveillance video. The footage allegedly showed Hall folding the receipt and placing it into the left pocket of her uniform vest before leaving work for the day.

Hall was arrested Monday morning after deputies met with her inside Walmart’s security office. Authorities said Hall told them she became distracted by another customer after speaking with the victim and placed the receipt in her pocket intending to give it to a manager, but never did.

Deputies said they later accompanied Hall to her vehicle, where they recovered the winning lottery receipt before placing her under arrest. Hall faces a felony grand theft charge.

Lottery expert Oscar Acosta, founder of LottoExpert.net, said winning players should take steps immediately to keep control of the paperwork that makes a prize claim possible. He urged people to sign winning tickets, take photos, and keep every receipt connected to the claim.

“You need to protect that ticket,” Acosta said. “You don’t want to lose track of that ticket.”

Acosta also warned that winners should be cautious when collecting prizes as lottery participation continues to grow.

“There is a level of trust,” Acosta said. “It requires a receipt and you can mail it in or if it’s a major prize, you are probably better off going in person.”

Walmart declined to comment on the incident. The company confirmed Hall is no longer employed by the retailer.

The case has refocused attention on what can go wrong in the narrow window between a ticket purchase and a successful claim—especially when the process depends on a small piece of paper that must be in the winner’s hands at the right time.

  1. I don’t get it, the man had the ticket but not the receipt… like why do they need both? Also how you gonna “hide” a receipt in your pocket and not notice later.

  2. Sounds like the real problem is the lottery rules, not the cashier. If it’s a $2,700 win, they should be able to look it up with the ticket number. Seems like a setup to me.

  3. “Became distracted by another customer” yeah okay… meanwhile this elderly guy’s trying to cash out and she’s out here pocketing paperwork. I hope they throw the book at her. Also receipts get lost all the time so like… why is this even a whole felony over paper? But also she’s not working there anymore so maybe that says everything.
