Blue Jays-Cubs finale postponed to Aug. 6 over weather

Blue Jays-Cubs – Sunday’s rubber match between the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs was postponed to Aug. 6 due to inclement weather, after the teams split the first two games.

The rubber match between the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs was supposed to settle the season-series tension on Sunday. Instead, the weather stepped in, and the teams announced the finale has been postponed to Aug. 6.

The pause matters because Chicago and Toronto already traded momentum in the first two games of the three-game set. Chicago took the opener on Friday with a 16-2 win, then Toronto answered on Saturday with an 8-6 comeback victory to even things up.

Dylan Cease was set to start for Toronto in Sunday’s finale. but it’s unclear how moving the game to Aug. 6 will affect the team’s rotation plan. What is clear is that the delay buys the Blue Jays bullpen some recovery time after their starters managed just 5.2 innings across the first two games of the series.

That rest day could land right when Toronto needs it most. The Aug. 6 date now slides into what had been a scheduled off-day between road series against the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies.

With Sunday pushed back, Toronto returns home for its next stretch: a three-game series against the Astros begins Monday. The game will feature Shane Bieber’s season debut, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.

  1. I don’t get why they can’t just start earlier or something. Inclement weather always ruins the whole Sunday vibe anyway. Hopefully the rotation doesn’t get messed up too bad.

  2. Moving it to Aug 6 basically guarantees the Blue Jays will “bounce back” because the bullpen gets rest, right? Like that’s the whole point. Also Dylan Cease was gonna pitch so now maybe he’s just not starting at all? Not sure.

  3. Aug 6 date sliding into an off-day sounds nice but it also sounds like MLB scheduling is a mess. If they already traded momentum in the first two games then a rain delay shouldn’t matter… except it does for bullpen rest I guess. And Shane Bieber debut on Monday?? That’s a lot of “important stuff” right after the weather thing. If it rains again then Chicago will claim it’s fixed or whatever.
