Starmer faces resignation talk after Trump blasts failures

Rumors that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer could step down as early as Monday have collided with President Donald Trump’s blunt claim on Truth Social that Starmer “will resign” after allegedly failing on immigration and energy. Inside the Labour Party, more
For days, Keir Starmer has said he intends to stay and fight any leadership challenge. Now, with talk spreading that he could step aside as early as Monday, the pressure inside Britain’s governing party has turned louder—and President Donald Trump has poured fuel on it.
On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social that “Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom.” He added: “He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!”
British media reports have since pointed to the prospect of a fast-moving transition. One report said Starmer could outline an “orderly exit” after discussions with senior allies and his wife. Senior Labour figures, according to the same reporting, are anticipating a “clear statement” on his future within days.
But Starmer’s office is pushing back against the speculation, insisting the prime minister remains focused on governing and has repeatedly said he would continue leading the country. A government source also rejected the idea of an imminent resignation.
That disagreement is playing out against a backdrop of internal Labour opposition that has been building for months. and then accelerated sharply after Andy Burnham won a parliamentary seat in a recent by-election. Burnham. a senior Labour figure and the mayor of Greater Manchester. returned to Parliament in the Makerfield seat. a victory that has boosted his standing among Labour lawmakers who are worried about the party’s direction.
In the U.K.’s parliamentary system, the leader of the governing party serves as prime minister. That means a leadership change could bring a new national leader without a general election.
The scale of the pressure is hard to ignore. More than 100 Labour members of Parliament have publicly called on Starmer to resign or to set out a timetable for his departure. Some reports suggest Burnham’s supporters may already command backing from a majority of Labour lawmakers—an outcome that would weaken Starmer’s ability to argue that he can still maintain confidence in Parliament.
Starmer, for his part, has resisted those calls. Speaking on Friday, he said he would contest any leadership challenge and urged party unity. “I will stand,” he said. “I’m not going to walk away from that.”
Even as the public-facing dispute intensifies, Downing Street has continued to say Starmer’s office is dismissing the resignation talk as conjecture. It added that the prime minister continues preparing for a possible leadership contest.
If Starmer does step aside, party officials are expected to push for an orderly transition, including the possibility that a successor could be confirmed at the Labour Party’s annual conference later this year.

Wait so Trump literally said he’ll resign??
Im not even sure how the UK works but doesn’t the PM decide when to leave? Trump on Truth Social talking like he’s the manager is wild. Immigration and energy, sure, but resign Monday sounds like a rumor mill thing.
Andy Burnham winning that seat is probably the real reason. Like once someone else starts winning elections, people start pushing the leader out. Also North Sea oil?? Isn’t that just a British thing they should handle themselves not Trump yelling about it.
Truth Social is basically making foreign policy now lol. They say his office is pushing back but everyone knows if Trump says it, it’s like already happening. I don’t get why Starmer would resign over immigration and energy though, those are huge and slow to change. Sounds like British media wants clicks and now they’re calling it an “orderly exit” like it’s a retirement plan.
