UCLA’s shocking loss reshapes Saturday NCAA baseball slate

Day 2 of the NCAA Baseball Tournament opens Saturday, with UCLA reeling after becoming the first No. 1 overall seed to lose its opening regional matchup. The slate includes Tennessee’s elimination in Chapel Hill, Florida State falling to St. John’s, and Kansas
UCLA’s season changed in a blink on Friday night at the Los Angeles Regional. The No. 1 overall seed fell 3-2 to Saint Mary’s in a stunner, exiting its opening matchup and making history as the first No. 1 overall seed ever to lose its opening regional game.
By Saturday, the NCAA Baseball Tournament has moved on to a fresh set of elimination threats and do-or-die second-round matchups. Tennessee’s run ended in the Chapel Hill Regional. Florida State fell into the losers’ bracket after a 6-5 loss to St. John’s, and other top seeds face pressure to keep their regional futures alive.
The bracket’s early volatility also pulled in several other highly regarded teams. No. 4 Auburn was sent down after giving up 13 runs to Milwaukee. No. 9 Southern Miss was upended by Little Rock. And in the Chapel Hill Regional. Tennessee didn’t get a chance to recover—falling 5-4 to East Carolina in its opening game and being eliminated.
Saturday’s action is packed with consequence. No. 5 North Carolina is set to take on East Carolina at 5 p.m. Eastern after the Pirates downed Tennessee in a 14-inning marathon. No. 15 Kansas begins its Day 2 path against Arkansas at 6 p.m. Eastern. Oregon also returns to the field in another Pac-12 rematch, playing Washington State at 9 p.m. Eastern after the Cougars held off Oregon State in the Eugene Regional.

What’s already been decided—and what’s next
Friday’s results set the tone: the tournament isn’t waiting for favorites to find their rhythm. UCLA’s 3-2 loss to Saint Mary’s wasn’t just a single upset; it snapped a first-seed expectation and sent the spotlight rushing to every remaining regional start.
For teams already facing elimination, Saturday becomes a test of composure as much as talent. Tennessee is already out after falling 5-4 to East Carolina’s bracket partner in Chapel Hill. and Florida State is forced to keep grinding after being dropped into the losers’ bracket by a 6-5 loss to St. John’s following a lengthy delay.
Now the schedule moves forward with an immediate message for every remaining contender: one more loss and the season ends. One more win and the bracket starts to look a little less predictable.
