Patriots’ A.J. Brown talks hinge on June 1 timing

A “framework” for a potential early-next-week A.J. Brown trade has been reported between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots, with June 1 acting as the key salary-cap date for Philadelphia—while competing reporting suggests New England may sti
The A.J. Brown trade saga doesn’t sound like it’s headed for a slow drip anymore—it’s starting to sound like it’s being paced against a calendar.
Several NFL reporters continue to link the New England Patriots to the Philadelphia Eagles’ three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. The expectation being circulated is that New England will land Brown soon, and the June 1 “green light date” is now just days away—Monday.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported Friday that there is “framework in place” for a trade between the Eagles and the Patriots. Breer said. “My understanding is the framework is in place for a trade to be made early next week that will make A.J. Brown a Patriot,” adding that the “exact terms, the details” still need work. He also said it would take “someone backing out at this point. whether it’s the Eagles or the Patriots. for it not to happen.”.
That timing matters because of salary-cap implications for Philadelphia. If the Eagles trade Brown before June 1, they would face a $43.5 million dead cap hit. If the deal happens after June 1, Philadelphia would take only a $16 million hit to their salary cap.
Breer’s report also left one major question hanging: what New England would have to give up. Philadelphia has reportedly sought a first-round pick and then some, but the Patriots’ willingness to part with a high selection remains a central point of tension.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport isn’t buying the idea that the finish line is already in sight. Rapoport said earlier this week that the Patriots “are not willing” to part ways with a first-rounder, and that the sides “aren’t particularly close” on a trade agreement.
Rapoport explained Wednesday. “I just don’t know it’s snap your fingers and the deal is done. because the two sides are where they had been. which is the Eagles wanting a first-round pick in 2027.” He added. “The Patriots. the most likely destination — we’ll see if someone else arises — but the Patriots. the most likely destination. [are] not willing to give up a first-round pick as of right now. ” before saying. “That means they’re not particularly close and that means there’s a chance this could drag on for the foreseeable future.”.
When it comes to that rumored “first-round” requirement, Breer said that if New England ultimately agrees to give up a first-rounder—either a 2027 or 2028 pick—he “thinks it gets done.”
Even with a down year and the debate over value at age 28 (29 on June 30). the Patriots’ internal math appears to be shifting toward urgency. New England could be willing to meet Philadelphia’s terms partly because Stefon Diggs is out the door. and third-year quarterback Drake Maye remains on a rookie contract—factors that could push the team to improve quickly as it looks to contend for the postseason again.
