Trump Station idea resurfaces as Penn Station renderings emerge

New renderings released this week for a major Penn Station overhaul show a modernized return to the station’s former design—while also reviving a question President Donald Trump has raised before: whether the transit hub’s name and imagery could carry his bran

When new renderings for Penn Station’s overhaul appeared this week. the redesign was only part of what caught the public eye. The other part was what looked like a political flourish—one image featuring a presidential seal and President Donald Trump’s name—at a moment when the project’s timeline is still years away.

Penn Station is the busiest transportation hub in the country, handling around 600,000 travelers daily. For all that traffic. it’s also a frequent target of frustration: visitors and commuters often complain about the station’s underground layout. and the lack of infrastructure such as adequate seating and bathrooms.

The Department of Transportation and Amtrak project expects to begin in 2027, and officials have been floating ideas for months about what could be done—ranging from moving the iconic arena overtop of the station to changing its name.

The renderings. released by officials this week. propose a reimagined Penn Station designed to feel like the version of the station that existed before it was torn down in the 1960s and turned into what it is today. They show a modernized design and a clearer attempt to address longstanding complaints. including new shops. cleaner and safer train platforms. and less confusing layouts.

MSG will stay, the project’s website says.

Whether the station becomes “Trump Station” after renovations

The signage in the renderings includes “Pennsylvania Station,” but one photo stands out for including a large, concrete wall carrying the presidential seal and President Trump’s name.

That detail lands in the middle of a debate over whether Trump’s name is being attached to the station in a lasting way. The renderings suggest a recognition of the president for his tenure, even if a full renaming doesn’t appear to be happening “for now, at least.”

The question is tied to a moment that surfaced earlier this year. In February. Trump—described as a former New York City resident—allegedly gave lawmakers an ultimatum involving federal funds for the new tunnel between New York and New Jersey. The condition. as reported at the time. was that if they wanted the cash. Penn Station would need to be renamed after him.

Based on the newest images, that outcome doesn’t look like it’s fully playing out through a straightforward name change. But the wall with the presidential seal and Trump’s name suggests a partial win—at least in visible symbolism.

A “beautifying” project that followed Trump’s second-term priorities

The Penn Station overhaul now reads like an extension of a broader pattern associated with Trump’s second term. The effort is being framed as part of a “beautifying” movement that has appeared across parts of Washington D.C. where the president has focused on upgrades ranging from the newly-painted Reflecting Pool to the White House itself.

The same naming and signage question has appeared in the past, too. In recent months, Trump prioritized upgrading parts of Washington D.C., and until recently he appended his name to the Kennedy Center.

Penn Station’s construction is projected to begin in late 2027, but the dispute over how his name might appear—if not through a full renaming, then through imagery—has already surfaced again.

For commuters, the timeline is far away. For politicians, the symbolism is arriving early.

  1. So they’re calling it Trump Station now?? Like, I thought the whole point was fixing it. But of course they slap his name on a render before anything even happens.

  2. I saw something about moving the arena and thought that meant they were gonna move Madison Square Garden too, which is wild. But the “seal and Trump name” thing sounds like a campaign ad on concrete. Also why would they even change the name if they’re already keeping MSG.

  3. This is what happens when rich people “modernize” something. They’ll repaint everything and then still have long lines, plus no seats. And the Trump seal wall… that’s like branding the station for tourists, not commuters. Also 2027 is so far out, maybe they won’t even do it, so why waste time with his name already?
