Trump plans to attend Knicks NBA Finals Game 3

Trump to – President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to attend Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 3, with security walkthroughs reportedly conducted by MSG ahead of the visit. The Knicks are returning to the Finals for the first time since

President Donald Trump’s planned trip to Madison Square Garden for the 2026 NBA Finals is already pulling two cities into the same orbit: the basketball-mad roar of the Knicks’ first Finals run since 1999. and the sharper political divide of a deep-blue New York City bracing for a highly visible guest.

Reporting indicated that Trump plans to attend Game 3 of the Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 3. The scheduling is described as conditional—set to happen barring changes to the president’s schedule—and tied to league sources.

MSG was not waiting quietly for the possibility. Security walkthroughs were reportedly held by Madison Square Garden in preparation for the potential visit, according to sources cited in separate reporting.

Trump has floated the idea before. During a cabinet meeting at the White House on May 27. he suggested he would go to one of the games at the Garden. saying Knicks owner Jim Dolan was among those who invited him. “I think I’ll be going to one of the games,” Trump said. “I was invited by numerous people and Jim and I think I’ll be going.”.

A Garden spokesperson previously said that “the President of the United States — no matter who is in office — is always welcome at all our venues.”

If Trump follows through, he would become the first sitting United States president to attend an NBA Finals game, and the first president to attend any NBA game since then-President Barack Obama saw the Chicago Bulls defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 97-95 in 2015.

The Knicks’ situation adds to the stakes inside the arena. The team is making its first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. a return that has largely united a city where basketball can feel like civic identity. But Trump’s presence in his hometown’s most prominent arena could also prove divisive in “deep-blue Gotham. ” where reactions to the president tend to run strong.

There is also a clear pattern to how Trump shows up at major sports moments during his second term. He has attended the Super Bowl, the college football national championship game, the Ryder Cup, the Daytona 500, and numerous UFC events.

Last year, he was at the U.S. Open men’s tennis final in New York. He also attended a UFC event at the Garden as president-elect in 2024.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump held a grievance-filled rally at “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” a stop that included racist remarks from several speakers.

Taken together—Game 3 timing on June 3. MSG security walkthroughs. Trump’s earlier comments at the White House. and the Knicks’ long-awaited Finals return—the weekend now carries more than sports significance. It will test how New York holds joy and backlash in the same seat at Madison Square Garden.

For now, the White House, Madison Square Garden, the NBA, and the Knicks have been contacted for comment, and the reported plan is framed as dependent on the president’s schedule.

  1. Deep blue NYC really about to host Trump like it’s normal 🙄. Security walkthroughs already? That seems excessive for basketball, but what do I know.

  2. Wait did I read that right—he’s gonna be there for Knicks vs Spurs Game 3? I thought Spurs are in the East now or something lol. Also conditional schedule changes like… isn’t it always “conditional” with him?

  3. First sitting president at an NBA Finals game, okay but I’m more stuck on the part about Jim Dolan inviting him. Like does that mean Dolan gets special treatment or what? And MSG doing walkthroughs already feels like they’re prepping for a rally not a basketball game. Knicks fans are gonna be loud though, so I can’t imagine it won’t be a whole thing.
