George Kittle targets Week 1 after Achilles tear

George Kittle says his Achilles recovery has no setbacks and he remains on track to return for Week 1, even as travel for the first game from Melbourne, Australia, adds another layer to his timeline.

George Kittle tore his Achilles with the kind of timing that flips an entire season plan on its head, and yet his focus has never drifted from one goal: getting back for the season opener.

On Wednesday. the 49ers tight end said his recovery remains smooth and that he is on track to return for Week 1. “My Achilles is doing great, no setbacks in my recovery,” Kittle said. “Checking all the boxes, doing everything I’m supposed to do. My surgeon’s super happy. My physical therapist in L.A., who works with him, is super happy. Niners are happy. I’m happy.”.

He tore his right Achilles during a Jan. 11 playoff game against the Eagles. The injury forced surgery and rehab on an accelerated timetable—Kittle had only eight months to get ready for the 2026 season—an early concern that he could miss part of the year. But Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery on Kittle’s Achilles in Los Angeles the week of the injury. and Kittle said the surgeon told him right after the operation that he had “a chance” to make it back for Week 1.

That message has carried momentum for him. “I mean, it definitely ignites something and makes you push for it,” Kittle said. “So, we’re on track; we’re ahead of schedule.”

The one complication he points to isn’t about the body—it’s about the calendar. The long round trip to and from Melbourne, Australia, for the first game adds pressure to his timeline, but he frames it as something he can work through. “Just another challenge,” he said.

Last season. Kittle made a seventh career Pro Bowl even though he played only 11 regular-season games because of hamstring and ankle injuries. For him, Week 1 return isn’t just about checking a box. It’s about reclaiming the routine he lost, and doing it with a recovery that, so far, has stayed steady.

  1. Achilles tears are basically career enders, so I’ll believe it when I see him walking out Week 1.

  2. Week 1 after an Achilles tear?? And they’re flying to Melbourne like that’s normal. Either he’s a machine or someone’s about to get hurt.

  3. Is this the same doctor that always does the big name surgeries in LA? I heard that Dr ElAttrache guy can fix anything lol. But also isn’t Achilles surgery like a 2 year thing? so idk.

  4. I don’t get the “ahead of schedule” thing because the schedule is the schedule… like traveling to Australia doesn’t magically not count. Feel like they’re pushing him just to sell tickets or something.
