President Donald Trump didn’t wait long to turn Tuesday night’s Democratic primary results in New York City into a social-media victory lap.
On Wednesday morning. Trump posted on Truth Social to congratulate Mayor Zohran Mamdani. a Democrat. for what he framed as the election of “3 solid Communists” during the primaries. In the same post. Trump charged that coverage of Mamdani—specifically what he called “loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media”—stood in contrast to silence around his own endorsements.
Trump wrote: “Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media. Congratulations Mr. Mayor!” He followed with another line aimed at the press: “I went 16-0 last night. helping to elect wonderful American Patriots. and the Media doesn’t say a word.”.
He added that “Over the last two years, my endorsement has netted 259 Primary WINS, and almost no losses, with Zero media attention!!! FAKE NEWS. President DJT.”
The praise was a direct response to Tuesday night’s Democratic primary wins for three candidates backed by Mamdani. Two of them—Darializa Avila Chevalier (D) and Claire Valdez (D)—are described as “card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America. ” the same group Mamdani is affiliated with.
The third candidate is Brad Lander (D). identified as a former Democratic Socialists of America member who left the organization after its response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack in Israel. Lander’s path to victory. however. was shaped by a political contrast with his opponent: he ran as an anti-Israel candidate against pro-Israel incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY). Lander has claimed that American support for Israel made the USA “complicit in genocide.”.
Beyond their socialist ties, the three candidates also share a specific policy demand: they agree with Mamdani that ICE needs to be abolished.
Mamdani celebrated the sweep on Tuesday night, but the political message reverberated beyond his coalition. The victories rattled establishment Democrats. One centrist House Democrat told Axios that 2027 would be a “headache” for the party with them around. Another House Democrat reacted to the sweep by saying “Holy sh*t.”.
Trump, meanwhile, has long been a critic of Mamdani’s politics. The president has quipped multiple times that Mamdani is a socialist. and he has even dubbed him “My little communist.” Yet the post also lands in a more complicated relationship: Trump and Mamdani have developed what the report describes as a “pretty good rapport. ” based on the two chummy meetings they’ve had at the White House.
The contrast in tone—Trump’s praise framed as a political win, and Democrats’ private anxiety about what comes next—has set the stage for how these primary results could echo into the next stretch of national politics.

Did he really say “16-0” like it’s some video game?? And the “fake news media doesn’t say a word” part is just him talking to his own audience again. I’m confused though—are these people communists or just socialist, because headlines always blur it.
This is probably all propaganda tbh. Like I get he’s mad about the NYC socialist stuff, but calling “card-carrying members” and then bragging about his endorsements like they’re winning for him… idk feels like he’s trying to rewrite what the primaries even mean. They keep saying “socialist sweep” but then he’s congratulating Mamdani like it’s a good thing? Or is he mad and just doing sarcasm? I saw a clip where it sounded like he was praising and roasting at the same time. Plus the whole anti-Israel angle got dragged in and now it’s like nobody knows what they’re actually voting for, just who hates who.
