The Sierra Fire near Boccardo Peak lit up the east hills above San Jose on Thursday, June 25, and residents in Alum Rock watched a large section of hillside burn as night fell.
The fire—located around the 5300 Block of Sierra Road in the east foothills—was seen from Alum Rock and reported by WatchDuty to be at 5 acres at the time of writing. The spread was described as slow in low grass, and for now, San Jose Fire Department said no structures are under threat.
In an update shared by the San Jose Fire Department. officials said firefighters are responding to a Tier 2 vegetation fire in the area of the 5000 block of Sierra Road in the east foothills. The department wrote that the blaze is approximately 5 acres in size. has a slow rate of spread. and that no structures are threatened at this time. They added a clear warning to residents: “Please avoid the area.”.
So far, a cause for the Sierra Fire has not been confirmed. The fire department also reported no known injuries, and no evacuation notices have been sent out for Alum Rock residents because the fire does not appear to be threatening nearby structures.
While the official situation description has stayed steady—limited acreage. slow spread. no structure threat—people in the neighborhood posted visuals showing how close the fire appears to be. Not all reactions matched what the city had said about the fire’s threat level, but the worry was palpable.
