Collins confronts Trump’s Reflecting Pool vandalism story

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins challenged President Donald Trump’s claims that his renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was vandalized, stepping through clips, pointing to missing Interior Department and Park Police footage, and citing reporting based on governme
For the second time in a week, President Donald Trump pushed a bold story about the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool—only for CNN’s Kaitlan Collins to meet it with receipts on-air.
On Tuesday’s “The Source With Kaitlan Collins. ” Collins replayed a clip of Trump bragging about how tough his renovated pool is. describing it as sealed and nearly indestructible. In the clip, Trump said, “This will last for at least 50 years. You’ll never have a leak.” He added that the surface was “very strong. ” and claimed you couldn’t even damage it with a knife: “I don’t want to give anybody ideas. If you had a knife, you can’t even cut it. So strong, so powerful, it’s like powerful rubber. It is beautiful. Sealed.”.
Collins didn’t leave it there. Before playing that durability clip. she aired a different segment—Trump’s comments to reporters on Wednesday. when he alleged that defacers committed “real horrible stuff” to the pool’s new “American flag blue” lining. Trump said, “Somebody went in with a knife and cut it. They cut it up good. And then they cut it 200- 350-foot slip in the form of lots of little slips. a real horrible stuff.” He made the same vandalism claims again in a Tuesday Truth Social post.
But Collins moved quickly to the part of the story where Trump’s version left readers without receipts.
“That’s what the president argued today,” Collins said after the footage aired. “There are not pictures or video, from the Interior Department officials, or the Park Police, showing someone making a cut in the pool.”
She then sharpened the point by linking Trump’s claims to government findings and reported documentation. Collins cited reporting from The New York Times, where the outlet obtained government documents indicating there was no indication that peeling paint and algae blooms were caused intentionally.
The timing and specifics also didn’t line up neatly. Collins pointed out that in his Tuesday Truth Social post. Trump said the pool would be partially drained “either immediately before or after the Fourth of July” for repairs. In that same post. Trump claimed six people had been arrested and seven had been cited “for the damage they did to our Country’s now beautiful Reflecting Pool.”.
Collins’ on-air pushback landed with a second layer: the contrast between how forcefully Trump talked about the pool and how much she said he was talking about it.
“That announcement was one of four posts that we saw from the President, about the Reflecting Pool, since about 8:00 p.m. last night, almost as many as he has posted about Iran,” Collins said.
The dispute didn’t end with her segment. Trump followed up on Wednesday with another Truth Social post that included an image he said showed the pool before it was recently refilled with water. He wrote, “This is the hard rubber surface — No Paint — Before the Vandals cut and pulled it apart!”
The White House’s insistence on intentional vandalism has faced skepticism from those looking closely at what’s actually visible. Collins referenced an account that HuffPost reported after a reporter walked around the pool on Monday and did not spot a gash.
By the time Collins finished laying out Trump’s durability boast—“Sealed”—against his later knife-and-cut allegations. the tension in the story felt less like a debate over aesthetics and more like a test of evidence: a claim of vandalism without the Interior Department or Park Police footage Collins said hasn’t been provided. and official documentation cited by The New York Times that doesn’t back up the intentional cause Trump described.
Donald Trump Kaitlan Collins CNN Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism Truth Social Interior Department Park Police New York Times algae bloom
so he said it can’t even be cut with a knife… but somehow it got cut?? i’m confused.
Receipts?? lol CNN always wants receipts. Also who cares if it’s “American flag blue” if the whole thing is still getting vandalized. Guess they should’ve just used cheaper materials
Wait so Trump is claiming there’s footage missing and Collins is saying there’s no footage at all? That sounds like one of those “my source vs your source” things. Also if it’s sealed and indestructible then maybe the vandal just… didn’t actually do it? Idk
i don’t get why CNN is acting like this is some gotcha. Even if there isn’t video, the Interior and Park Police probably have it somewhere or they’re “investigating.” Plus Trump said 50 years, so maybe the knife thing was exaggerated but vandalism happens anyway… people are weird. Sounds like politics over a pool
