Polarizing comedian Tony Hinchcliffe is back on Netflix with a new stand-up special, “Tony Hinchcliffe: Man of the People,” after backlash from his earlier comedy controversies. The 55-minute special launched June 9, jumped to No. 3 on Netflix’s Top TV shows,
The applause came, but it wasn’t the kind that settled the debate.
Filming at The Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, Tony Hinchcliffe strode onto the stage and bellowed, “Who’s with me?” He paused for 15 seconds to absorb the response—an interruption in the middle of a rollout that has again turned his comedy into a fight.
Just days after Hinchcliffe’s new Netflix stand-up special arrived. critics and fans were already arguing over what he’s saying—and who it’s aimed at. The special. “Tony Hinchcliffe: Man of the People. ” is his third Netflix stand-up project in the past year. and it landed the way his audience has come to expect: with immediate attention. immediate backlash. and very little middle ground.
The teaser trailer for the 55-minute special dropped online June 2, and it did not soften the message. In the clip, Hinchcliffe boasts that he’s “made fun of Blacks, Latinos, the whites, the Indians, Asians,” before quipping that viewers are probably wondering where his “Jew jokes” are.
When the special released June 9, it jumped to No. 3 on Netflix’s Top TV shows immediately after its debut, and it currently sits at No. 5 on the list.
Hinchcliffe also hosts the stand-up comedy podcast “Kill Tony,” and his new Netflix special fits a pattern of career decisions that keep reigniting old arguments about comedy’s boundaries.
The controversy that keeps circling back
A month after Hinchcliffe ignited backlash during Netflix’s “The Roast of Kevin Hart” on May 10, the same comedian returned to the platform with “Man of the People.”
His earlier controversy became a flashpoint during the 2024 presidential campaign. Hinchcliffe performed at an October 2024 Trump Madison Square Garden rally. joking that Puerto Rico was a “floating island of garbage.” The remarks sparked bipartisan backlash. drew condemnation from Puerto Rican leaders and celebrities. and prompted the Trump campaign to distance itself.
Hinchcliffe refused to apologize. Writing on X, he told critics: “These people have no sense of humor. I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone…watch the whole set.”
That prior backlash did not stay contained either. During Netflix’s “The Roast of Kevin Hart” in May 2026, Hinchcliffe sparked another wave of outrage. During the segment. he said George Floyd—described as the Black man murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020—was “looking up at us all. laughing so hard that he can’t breathe.”.
The joke did not appear in a preview Hinchcliffe delivered earlier. It was not part of the informal set preview he gave at “Beautifully Broken Comedy with Jelly Roll” at Los Angeles’ Greek Theater on May 8.
During Chelsea Handler’s “Roast” set, the late-night host repeatedly targeted Hinchcliffe. She joked that “Tony is what happens when women don’t have safe access to abortion care” and mocked his ties to the MAGA movement.
Handler later doubled down on her stance on the “Funny Knowing You” podcast, strongly objecting to the roast material from Hinchcliffe and host Shane Gillis. “It’s just everything we know: that they’re racist, that they’re bigots, they’re sexist,” Handler said.
Hinchcliffe responded on his “Kill Tony” podcast by calling Handler a vulgar slur and other ridicule.
Not everyone condemned the roast in the same way, though. Terrence Floyd. George Floyd’s brother. told “The Breakfast Club” podcast host Loren LoRosa that Hart should have brought “Will Smith energy” to the roast by pushing back on Hinchcliffe’s joke “right then and there. ” referencing the moment Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars after making a joke about his wife. Kevin Hart was also drawn into the post-roast debate. Speaking on “The Breakfast Club” podcast, Hart said that while Hinchcliffe’s joke about Floyd wasn’t “tasteful,” he “wasn’t shocked.” Hart added that Hinchcliffe “arguably had the best set, or one of the best sets,” of the roast.
“It literally is, either you’re a fan of this level of content or you’re not,” Hart said. “And if you’re not a fan, then you don’t watch it.”
A new special, the same split audience
Hinchcliffe’s “Man of the People” also triggered an online reaction before many viewers had even watched the full special.
The June 2 YouTube sneak peek brought out both critics and supporters. When the clip was posted to Instagram on June 9, comedian Dan Docimo wrote: “Holy crap this sucks. @netflixisajoke this like… this sucks man.”
Another user was more pointed with a one-line critique: “Shane Gillis is actually fun while still making fun of people. This is like a Temu Anthony Jesilnik.”
The tone is visible in the engagement numbers. The Instagram post drew 4,377 likes, while the reaction section included mostly negative comments—described as 637 brutally negative Instagram comments.
Reviews show the same division
By the time the special landed, critics were already searching for reasons not to laugh.
Several reviews posted on RottenTomatoes say the Netflix special wasn’t funny. One reviewer said it “felt like shock humor that did not land.” Another wrote: “I have no problem with edgy jokes if they land. Not whatever this was. That was a hard watch.” A third called it “an extremely flat performance.”.
Still, Hinchcliffe’s fans were willing to show up loud and fast. During his Phoenix stop, he asked the room, “Who’s with me?” and paused for 15 seconds to absorb the applause—an embrace of the argument, not an escape from it.
