Three European escapes promise effortless summer bliss

dreamy summer – A travel consultant who’s been building itineraries for years shares three European destinations—Comporta in Portugal, Gozo in Malta, and Hvar in Croatia—each picked for a different kind of summer: beach calm, island discovery, and nightlife energy.

At 21, she planned a girls’ trip to Iceland and fell in love with the art of crafting the perfect itinerary. Years later, she still thinks about travel planning the same way—carefully, obsessively, and with the kind of excitement you only get when a place leaves a mark.

Now a travel consultant who’s been all over Europe—from Spain to Germany to Slovakia—she’s back with three spots she says she can’t stop recommending for a dreamy summer.

Comporta is the one she returns to when she wants the ocean to do most of the talking. Seventy-five miles south of Lisbon—about an hour-and-a-half drive away—is a laid-back Portuguese village with white-sand beaches. pine forests. and clear blue water. During her time there. she spent days soaking up the sun at Praia da Comporta and Praia do Pego. where the ocean was the main attraction and beach clubs were never far away.

Her favorite for long, indulgent lunches was Comporta Café Beach Club, nestled in the dunes of Praia da Comporta. She says it offered plenty of delicious, traditional Portuguese seafood. But one detail made the place feel especially memorable: she went horseback riding right on the beach. visiting a local equestrian school that offered scenic trail rides—and while riding. she learned that Madonna was a frequent visitor.

If she’s building a trip for someone chasing serenity, she won’t hesitate to start with Comporta: “great food, and a bit of adventure,” all wrapped into a slow beach town mood.

For a different kind of summer—relaxing, unique, and full of small discoveries—she points to Gozo, located in the Maltese archipelago. Malta had been on her list for a long time, but she says her sister island, Gozo, left such a lasting impression that it quickly became the real story of the trip.

Getting there was simple: she took a quick ferry ride from Malta. and within 40 minutes. she says the island’s dramatic coastline made her feel awestruck. Once she arrived, she chatted with locals who told her to try Maxokk Bakery. She learned that the ftira—a flattened Maltese bread often used for sandwiches—would be worth the “hourslong wait times.” She and her partner didn’t skip it: she tried a tuna ftira and an anchovy pizza. and they agreed.

From there, the pace shifted to coastline time. She took a quick ride-share to Ramla Bay, a red-sand beach, then hiked up to Mixta Cave, a natural cave overlooking Ramla Bay. She calls Mixta Cave the highlight of the trip.

And she’s already planning what comes next. Next time, she wants to stay for even longer and explore towns and villages like Xlendi and Marsalforn—not only for seaside dining, but to check out the diving scene and more natural wonders.

Her third recommendation turns the dial from calm to energy. After exploring Croatia, she says Hvar was her favorite spot. Split and Dubrovnik were both highlights of her trip, but she describes Hvar as the true standout.

It’s easy to get to: fly into Split, then take a 90-minute ferry ride. Once there, she says there are tons of cool places to stay. Her group found a gorgeous Airbnb located right in Hvar Town, about 90 steps from the water.

Food matched the setting. She names Mamato Bar as one of the memorable spots. describing it as a laid-back lunch spot with great ocean views. She also points to Laganini Lounge Bar and Fish House, a slightly fancier place she reached by boat. There, she says they enjoyed Dalmatian cuisine and a live DJ music set.

When it comes to the evenings, Hvar leans fully into nightlife. She highlights Carpe Diem Beach Hvar and Hula-Hula Beach Bar as places that provided “legendary sunsets,” along with dancing and drinks.

Her pitch is simple: if you want a lively place to relax and then dance the night away, Hvar is the destination she would send you to.

Taken together, her three picks map neatly onto three different summer moods—Comporta’s beach calm and horseback riding by the surf, Gozo’s island discoveries shaped by local food and Mixta Cave’s view, and Hvar’s Adriatic nightlife built around bars, boats, and live music.

  1. So are these places cheap or is this just for rich people? 75 miles from Lisbon sounds close but idk lol.

  2. I’m confused, does Comporta have nightlife or just beaches? Like the article says beach calm but also mentions beach clubs so which one is it.

  3. Horseback riding on the beach and Madonna visits?? That’s wild but also kind of sounds made up. If Madonna was there wouldn’t there be like paparazzi or something?

  4. Gozo and Hvar and Portugal… can’t people just vacation in Florida like everyone else. This whole “effortless summer bliss” thing feels like an ad. Also she said 21 planned a trip to Iceland? okay so now we’re supposed to trust her itinerary skills forever.
