Maher tells Vance his vote may swing GOP

Maher tells – Bill Maher used a visit from Vice President JD Vance on “Real Time” to make a pointed pitch: if Republicans keep winning only by claiming elections are rigged, Maher said he’s willing to vote for Vance or Marco Rubio—while demanding they stop the “crying foul”

Bill Maher didn’t wait for the cameras to warm up. When Vice President JD Vance sat down on “Real Time” to promote his new book “Communion,” the conversation turned into something closer to a warning than a friendly interview.

Maher. who has spent years publicly drifting toward the political right while remaining a sharp critic of the culture war on the left. told Vance directly that his vote is “in play.” The line landed after Maher mocked Vance’s administration over the handling of the war in Iran and over ICE deportations—gripes that still didn’t stop Maher from saying he was weighing a switch.

He said he’s being pushed away from progressive Democrats, particularly on Israel and crime. Maher described what he sees as a Democratic obsession with Israel. and what he called a slide into “Jew-hating. ” a rejection of capitalism. and policies that he framed as letting criminals go—ending with the blunt conclusion: “If this is where the Democratic Party is going… this obsession with Israel. with the Jew-hating. with they don’t believe in capitalism. no prisons. if this is where they’re going. my vote is in play. ” Maher said.

Maher also stressed that he has never voted strictly along party lines. “I don’t make my decision by who has an R or a D,” he said. “I actually always came to the conclusion that the Democrat was probably better. and voted for them.” He said his recent calculus had shifted—until Vance’s response and the administration’s approach to elections kept coming up.

That issue arrived as Maher laid out what he called his dealbreaker for Vance’s side. He said the political dynamic under Trump has produced two outcomes after elections: either Republicans claim victory. or they allege cheating. “Here’s my dealbreaker for your side: Under Trump. you guys have two outcomes that an election can be. either we win or they cheated. That shit has to stop,” Maher said.

Maher turned the demand into a direct question about responsibility. “And that means the person who has to stop it will be you, or Marco. Can you tell me you will do that?” he asked—naming the two figures at the center of the night’s tension.

Vance refused to give a straightforward answer. Instead. he pointed to what he described as the real problem with the 2020 presidential election: alleged bias from social media platforms. Maher responded that such a deflection would win Vance a congratulatory “attaboy” back in Washington. even if it wouldn’t play well on the show.

At the same time. Maher made clear his openness to voting for Republicans—so long as the party stops treating every loss like evidence of fraud. He said he would gladly vote for Vance or for Secretary of State Marco Rubio. provided that Republicans stop what he described as “crying foul every time they lose an election.”.

The sequence was the whole story: Maher complained about the administration’s conduct on issues ranging from Israel to ICE deportations and then still asked Vance to earn his vote by taking a harder. more accountable line on election legitimacy. When Vance sidestepped the question, Maher didn’t retreat—he simply made the trade explicit. In his view, the politics aren’t just about policy anymore. They’re about whether the next step is honesty when elections end, regardless of who wins.

  1. Maher talking about “crying foul” like the GOP invented it lol. Also the whole Iran/ICE stuff I’m not even sure what’s accurate, but yeah dude says his vote is “in play” every election cycle it seems.

  2. Wait he said he could vote for Vance or Marco Rubio because Republicans keep saying elections are rigged? I feel like that’s backwards though. Like… shouldn’t he be mad at the “rigged” claims from Dems? Also what does the book have to do with war in Iran??

  3. Maher’s just trying to stay relevant. One minute he’s roasting Trump-ish people, next minute he’s like “my vote is in play.” And the article says he’s accusing the Dems of Jew-hating and no capitalism and no prisons which… cmon. half the time these commentators pull random quotes and make it sound like the whole party is the problem.
