Heat wave forecast threatens South Georgia with extreme heat

South Georgia is bracing for a prolonged heat wave over the next week. Meteorologist Justin Williams says temperatures may reach the mid to upper 90s, with high humidity pushing heat index values above 100 degrees—prompting health officials to urge hydration,

The warning lands before the hottest hours do. Over the next week, South Georgia is expected to settle into a prolonged heat wave—dangerous not just because it will be hot, but because the air’s moisture will make it feel far worse.

Meteorologist Justin Williams said temperatures are expected to climb into the mid to upper 90s. With high humidity in the mix, health experts are preparing residents for heat index values well above 100 degrees.

Health officials say the danger isn’t abstract. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The message is especially urgent for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, and anyone who works outdoors.

They’re also laying out what residents can do, starting with hydration and changing how the day is scheduled. Officials recommend staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Lightweight clothing is advised, along with frequent breaks—either in air-conditioned spaces or in the shade.

For people who can’t step away from the sun, the guidance is clear: don’t push through long stretches outside. Take breaks often, cool down when you can, and keep fluids going.
