‘The Bear’ Season 5 taps Chicago’s storm-hit reality

Rain, chaos, and damage are stepping out of Chicago’s weather radar and into the plot of “The Bear” Season 5. The series’ premiere leans into a severe storm that disrupts restaurant plans—while the real-world backdrop matches an exceptionally wet and destructi

A wrench thrown into restaurant plans by a sudden downpour is how “The Bear” Season 5 starts, and it lands hard because Chicago is living a storm story in real time.

In the fifth and final season, a severe rainstorm runs through the day’s action—bursting pipes and even contributing to a car crash in the premier episode. The show’s debut is arriving almost in lockstep with a year that has been exceptionally rainy, stormy, and destructive for Chicago and Illinois.

For many residents, the timing feels too close for comfort. Days after a tornado killed two in Jefferson County, and just over a week after Illinois broke its annual tornado record, the series leans into drama that looks and feels familiar.

Chicago has already had its wet start to spring on record

Chicago began spring with rainfall that broke records. Between March 1 and April 20, O’Hare International Airport received about 10.63 inches of rain—more than double the average rainfall of 4.66 inches during that period.

By May 1, the Chicago area had accumulated well above normal rainfall for that point in the year, reaching 14.45 inches since Jan. 1 compared with the normal 10.31 inches, based on NOAA figures cited in the reporting. That total rose to 20.56 inches by June 24, compared with a normal 17.99 inches.

Even winter left its mark

Chicago’s storm season didn’t start with spring storms. The city set a similarly strong tone going into last year’s snowy stretch, with snowfall records broken by the end of November, according to NOAA.

After a massive snowstorm over Thanksgiving weekend, Chicago recorded 10.4 inches of snowfall between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30—far above the normal two inches during that period, and the highest recorded 7.1 inches. February then ended with snowfall still slightly above normal, with 32.3 inches versus the typical 31.6 inches.

Illinois became the nation’s top tornado, hail, and wind state

By mid-April, Illinois was leading the country in tornado, hail, and wind reports. The reporting cited AccuWeather data saying the state logged 100 tornado reports between Jan. 1 and April 19—more than twice as many as the runner-up, Mississippi, which reported 43.

Illinois also posted 147 hail reports, compared with 143 in neighboring runner-up Iowa. High wind reports—covering automated wind gust records—topped out at 245 at the time in Illinois, with Alabama in second place at 209.

As of June 25, Illinois remained the state with the most tornado reports, reaching 200 preliminary tornado reports by June 23.

That storm surge fed into a new record by mid-June

The latest severe weather in the real world arrived with a swath of storms on June 17, and it pushed Illinois past previous annual limits.

The number of finalized tornado reports surpassed 2025’s record of 147. while preliminary reports reached 164. according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill. The series’ fictional struggle—rain that keeps interrupting the day and derailing plans—plays out against a set of weather numbers that. year after year. have been turning into headline proof.

The episode’s rain feels like more than set dressing right now. because in the background Illinois is already dealing with the consequences: disrupted homes. damaged business and more in the central Illinois area on June 17. And with the city’s spring already marked by record rainfall. the “The Bear” Season 5 premiere doesn’t just borrow atmosphere. It mirrors a season when the sky has repeatedly turned from backdrop to threat.
