Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby turns to NFL supplemental draft

Brendan Sorsby is applying for the NFL’s supplemental draft after a judge granted him a temporary injunction to play for Texas Tech this fall. The move comes as court records show he acknowledged making thousands of impermissible bets totaling at least $90,000
The timing has turned the story on its head for Brendan Sorsby.
After a judge last week issued a temporary injunction that would clear the way for him to play this fall for Texas Tech, the quarterback is now applying for the NFL’s supplemental draft, according to multiple reports on Monday.
The decision lands in the middle of an ongoing legal battle over his NCAA eligibility. The NCAA had declared Sorsby ineligible for wagering on college sports, including bets made on his own team while he was at Indiana.
Court records show Sorsby has acknowledged making thousands of impermissible bets totaling at least $90. 000 during his time at Indiana. Cincinnati and Texas Tech. Those records include 40 bets on Indiana while he was a freshman there in 2022. though none of the bets were on any of the games he played in with the Hoosiers.
The NFL supplemental draft is an alternate summer process. It gives NFL teams a way to bid on players whose NCAA eligibility changed suddenly and who did not enter the main draft.
That route has produced major names in the past, including Josh Gordon, Terrelle Pryor, Cris Carter and Bernie Kosar. The last selection in the supplemental draft came in 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals took safety Jalen Thompson.
Sorsby’s situation also carried a different possibility earlier in the year. Many believed he could have been a first-round selection if he had entered the main draft in April. Instead, the 22-year-old QB threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with Cincinnati last season.
Now, with his eligibility case still tied to wagering allegations and a temporary court order in play, his next step points toward an NFL path that bypasses the normal timeline—one set up for players in exactly this kind of sudden eligibility swing.
