Students release salmon they helped raise into Sydenham River

The schools involved in the program this year are St. Mary’s High School, Notre Dame Catholic School, Arran-Tara Elementary School, East Ridge Community School and Alexandra Community School. “I’ve learned a lot. I’m quite a fishing enthusiast. I love fishing, and the process of the Chinook salmon really fascinates me,” said Wyatt Ainslow, who helped at the hatchery on Monday. Ainslow said the Chinook salmon life cycle, and how the fish return to the place they were born to reproduce and eventually die, opened his

eyes to the conservation aspect of the project and the work of the SSA. “It’s just a cool fact of life,” said Ainslow. “I really love this program.” The program, reignited by St. Mary’s teacher Jason Kim and the SSA after a similar program was put on pause during the pandemic, begins with salmon raised from eggs at each school.

  1. This is actually kinda wholesome. My cousin said the salmon “come back” to the same spot, which is wild, but also like how do they even know where to go after being raised in a hatchery? Seems like magic.

  2. Wait, I thought chinook salmon are from the ocean like way bigger fish? Also if they die after spawning that’s kinda sad, not gonna lie. But yeah, love fishing so I guess it’s good for conservation. Still not sure why this needs schools if adults could do it.

  3. Pandemic pause?? So they’re bringing it back now because of vibes? I don’t get it. If the salmon return to where they were born, then shouldn’t they be returning to the hatchery, not the river. Anyway sounds nice, just worried they’re gonna get eaten by something right away.
