Target pulls Up & Up wipes after bacteria traces found

When parents reach for a pack of baby wipes, they expect something gentle enough for daily use. Instead. Target is pulling certain Up & Up wipes from shelves after federal testing found traces of bacteria—an outcome the Food and Drug Administration warned can be especially dangerous for newborns and infants.

Target is voluntarily recalling select Up & Up branded wipes over a potential contamination. The affected products are the Up & Up Fragrance-Free Baby Wipes and the Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes. The decision followed customer complaints and FDA testing that identified traces of bacteria in the products. according to a June 5 notice from the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall centers on concerns involving the Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi. The FDA notice warns that use of products contaminated with these bacteria “may result in serious and life-threatening infections. ” and stresses that the products are “predominantly used on newborns. infants. and young children. ” who are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems.

Target is also responding to reports from customers who say symptoms such as skin irritation. eye irritation and infections occurred after using the recalled baby wipes. Customers also flagged product discoloration. The notice says these reports remain under investigation, with Target coordinating with the manufacturer and continuing to investigate the matter.

For families dealing with a baby’s frequent skin contact—diaper-area rashes. eye exposure during cleanups. and the everyday need for safe hygiene—what stands out is the range of potential consequences described by regulators. The FDA notice says use of the recalled product on immunocompromised individuals. including infants and young children. can potentially lead to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia. because infection may spread into the bloodstream.

The wipes were made by Turkish manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri and were sold at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com. Sapro Temizlik Urunleri did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  1. I swear every “fragrance-free” thing still somehow causes irritation. I saw cucumber scented and figured it was gonna be a problem. Bet people won’t even check the lot numbers though.

  2. Wait so the FDA testing found bacteria traces but it’s “voluntary recall” so like… is it confirmed or not? My nephew uses these and had redness once, but could’ve been anything. Also “life-threatening” sounds dramatic, babies get rashes all the time.

  3. Burkholderia cepacia complex? That sounds like something from space lol. But anyway I think it’s the fragrance even if they say fragrance-free, and the cucumber ones are probably worse. Target always has good prices but now I’m just gonna switch to whatever brand my friend uses. Hope they refund fast.
