Student protest cuts mic after Hitler-linked quote

At Hoggard High School’s graduation on June 6, student Sara Rudeseal said the class valedictorian, Kyler Hosek, used part of a Kanye West quote from an Infowars interview while omitting the portion referencing Hitler—then had her microphone cut as she challeng
The moment came at the exact point families had been waiting for—diplomas lifted, cameras rolling, a school’s biggest night turning into something sharper than a celebration.
On June 6 at Hoggard High School in North Carolina, valedictorian Kyler Hosek offered a closing line he attributed to his “biggest inspiration.” He said, “As my biggest inspiration once said, ‘Every human being has something of value that they bring to the table,’” and then ended his remarks.
But about ten seconds later, the tone shifted.
Sara Rudeseal, speaking while receiving her diploma, challenged the quote publicly. She told the room that Hosek had quoted a 2022 Infowars interview with the rapper also known as Ye—and that he had left out the part that referenced Adolf Hitler. Her microphone was cut moments after she began.
In the livestream of the ceremony, Rudeseal is seen taking the microphone after being called to receive her diploma. She said. “Valedictorian Kyler William Hosek quoted a 2022 interview with Kanye West from Infowars. ” and added. “What Kyler forgot to do was finish the quote. Every human being has brought value that they…,” before the audio was cut.
The 2022 appearance on Infowars included West saying: “Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler.”
Rudeseal later explained that she and other students began discussing what they had heard immediately, texting screenshots of West’s quote after Hosek’s speech ended. She said the decision to speak wasn’t preplanned.
“It just would’ve been hushed up,” Rudeseal told the Wilmington Star-News, describing how she acted in the moment. “If nobody said anything, it just would’ve been hushed up.” She said she “just grabbed the mic” and spoke until the audio was cut.
She also said the school principal, Christopher Madden, directed her to leave the stage before she received her diploma. Rudeseal said she went to the campus with family and friends to speak with Madden on Monday but was told he was unavailable. She said she received her diploma that day from an assistant principal.
West has faced widespread criticism in recent years over antisemitic comments, including statements praising Adolf Hitler. In January. he published a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal apologizing for previous remarks and stating: “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”.
For Rudeseal, the issue was not just the quote, but responsibility.
She said she does not know Hosek personally but believes the quote was used intentionally. “I’d like to see him take responsibility for what he said,” she told the newspaper.
Hosek’s family responded with a different framing. In a statement to local station WWAY. Hosek’s family said his speech focused on the future of artificial intelligence and the opportunities it could create. The family described the address as “a positive outlook on the future of AI emphasizing the growing opportunity for all of us to make profound societal achievements in the future. that we all have something to offer and contribute. and that everyone has value.” The statement did not mention the source of the quote Hosek cited.
The livestream shows Hosek planning to attend Purdue University in Indiana.
The district said it is taking the incident seriously.
New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Christopher R. Barnes told local media that the district “unequivocally rejects and condemns any messages of hate. discrimination. antisemitism. or other harmful ideologies associated with any individual or public figure.” Barnes said Hosek’s speech underwent the district’s standard review process before the ceremony.
“While the district did not identify any connection during the review process, we understand that some members of our community perceived the language differently,” Barnes said.
Barnes added that the district is “carefully reviewing our graduation speech protocols and practices to determine how additional guidance and safeguards can improve the process moving forward.” He also said privacy laws prevent the district from discussing disciplinary matters involving individual students.
The student protest comes days after another high school valedictorian faced backlash after criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during her remarks.
For many in the audience on June 6, the emotional impact wasn’t only what was said—it was how quickly the moment became a confrontation. Rudeseal’s microphone cut off as she tried to finish the sentence she believed the valedictorian left out.
When a graduation ceremony turns into a fight over a single missing phrase. the question becomes less abstract and more immediate: what do students hear when the words are carefully screened. and what happens when even that screening can’t prevent the most damaging interpretations from landing in real time.

Wait so they cut her mic for finishing a quote? That seems backwards.
Sounds like censorship at graduation. Like if it’s about “Hitler” or whatever then why even allow the original quote in the first place…
I mean Kanye says crazy stuff all the time, but why is everyone acting like this is proof of the whole school? Also “mic cut moments after she began” could be an accident like timing/tech? Idk.
I’m sorry but graduating and protesting about Hitler in the middle of it is wild. But the valedictorian quoting something from Infowars is also just asking for drama. Next they’re gonna ban Kanye from speech class or something. I didn’t even finish reading the article tho, I just saw the headline and knew it was gonna be a mess.
