Brewers lock Luis Lara to seven-year deal

Luis Lara, the Brewers’ No. 5 prospect and No. 91 overall, has agreed to a seven-year contract with three club options that would guarantee about $31 million when finalized, while the deal keeps him tied to Milwaukee through the early part of the next decade.
LAS VEGAS — For the second time this season, the Brewers are spending like they already believe in the future.
The latest name to cash in before reaching the Major Leagues is 21-year-old switch-hitting outfielder Luis Lara. Listed by Milwaukee as its No. 5 prospect and the No. 91 overall prospect, Lara has agreed to a seven-year contract with three club options. A source told MLB.com the agreement will guarantee about $31 million when finalized.
Milwaukee has not confirmed the deal, which was first reported by Spencer Michaelis, a podcaster and contributor to the fan site Brewer Fanatic.
The timing matters because it echoes a broader approach the Brewers have leaned on with their top prospects. Lara’s agreement puts him alongside Jackson Chourio and Cooper Pratt as Brewers phenoms locked into long-term contracts while they were still in the Minor Leagues.
The contract itself covers 2026 through 2032, with club options for 2033 through 2035. According to a Brewers source, the deal can reach $78 million with all incentives, including for MVP Awards. With incentives and options depending on performance. it could realistically net north of $63 million if all of the options are exercised and Lara performs at a star level across the life of the contract.
Even with the paper in place, the biggest step doesn’t happen automatically. The agreement places Lara on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster, but it does not mean an immediate callup.
Lara’s breakout has been loud enough to explain why the Brewers moved early. At 5-foot-7, he has shifted from being valued for speed, defense, and contact into a power threat. In his first 56 games with Triple-A Nashville, he has produced a .947 OPS, 17 extra-base hits, and 18 stolen bases.
The contract news also aligns with what Nashville fans may have noticed. Lara’s recent absence from the Triple-A lineup came as the extension was being finalized. He was in Milwaukee over the weekend for a physical exam.
For now. the deal is less about rushing a call to the big leagues and more about securing the kind of prospect Milwaukee believes can change the shape of its roster later. And with the Brewers investing again at this stage of Lara’s career. the message is clear: the wait may be long. but the commitment is already permanent.

So they just threw money at a guy before he even got called up? ok.
I don’t get it, $31 million sounds like a lot but then it says could be $78?? Is that like guaranteed or not cuz the article is kinda all over the place.
Breaking news: 7-year deal means he’s getting promoted today, right? Like why else would they put him on the 40-man roster. Fans are gonna be mad if he stays in Triple-A.
Wait he’s 5-foot-7 and now they’re saying power threat? That seems backwards lol. I saw he was out of the lineup and thought it was injury stuff, but nope it’s for contract business. Also all the MVP incentive talk… I feel like that’s just Brewers math to make it look bigger than it is. Still, good for him I guess.
