On June 1, Steak ’n Shake customers may spot a change they can’t see but will taste: the company says its burgers will be made with beef from pasture-raised cattle—100% grass-fed and grass-finished.
The fast-food chain announced the switch in a May 12 post on X. saying the move is part of its effort to “do things better” and branding the new sourcing as what it calls the “healthiest kind of beef.” Steak ’n Shake also said it will be “the only American burger joint” serving 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef. a claim it used to frame the transition as a differentiator in a crowded fast-food market.
The company linked the change to the agenda of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose “Make America Healthy Again” push has become a central theme in Steak ’n Shake’s recent restructuring. In April. the company announced a new corporate role—Chief “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) Officer—part of what it described as a broader effort to reshape its food and brand identity around what it calls nutritional integrity and ingredient transparency.
That role will be filled by Michael Boes. identified by the company as a developer of the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and a past senior adviser within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. In the company’s description of the position. the job is a “new executive role dedicated to advancing nutritional integrity. ingredient transparency. and the long-term health of Steak ’n Shake customers.”.
Sardar Biglari. chairman and CEO of Biglari Holdings—the owner of Steak ’n Shake—said in the company’s release that appointing a Chief MAHA Officer signals continued commitment to make Steak ’n Shake “the great differentiator in fast food.” Biglari added that Boes was “ideally suited” for the role because of his “deep understanding of nutrition and his experience at the highest level of health policymaking.” Biglari concluded with a blunt promise: “To put it simply. good-tasting food should also be good for you.”.
Steak ’n Shake has continued to align its operations with the MAHA agenda through multiple ingredient and service changes over the last year. The company said it is switching from seed oils to beef tallow for cooking. announced in a social media post in March 2025. In that March announcement, the chain said, “Steak ’n Shake is proud to support MAHA and Secretary Kennedy!. Your days are numbered seed oil. We want to lead the way and make a difference!. #MAHA.” Kennedy Jr. later thanked the restaurant for its “leadership in the crusade to Make America Healthy Again.”.
The beef shift is also only one stop in a broader list of adjustments the chain has publicly pursued. In August, Steak ’n Shake said it would offer customers Coca-Cola soda with cane sugar in glass bottles. And at each location. it said it planned to install the “tallest and biggest American flag that local governments will allow.”.
Earlier. Steak ’n Shake also said it would remove all microwaves from franchise locations by April. writing in an online post that “quality restaurants don’t need microwaves.” The chain said the change is part of its “journey to improve food quality and use traditional methods of cooking only. ” adding “Eat Real Food.”.
All of those moves—tallow replacing seed oils. cane-sugar Coca-Cola in glass bottles. microwave removal. and now pasture-raised. 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef—are being treated by the company as a single story: a brand overhaul built around a health-forward narrative tied to Kennedy Jr.’s MAHA effort.
Steak ’n Shake did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the beef-source change.

Grass-fed steak n shake?? Guess my burger’s gonna taste like a lawn now lol.
Isn’t grass-fed still like… processed and all that? Also MAHA thing sounds political, like they’re blaming RFK for my hunger.
I saw this on X and everyone was like “healthiest beef” but idk, I’m not convinced. They always say stuff is transparent then it’s just marketing. Also isn’t Steak ’n Shake kinda the same regardless what cow ate?
Okay but how much more expensive is it gonna be June 1? They said it’s connected to that Make America Healthy Again agenda and now there’s some MAHA Officer?? sounds like government in my burger. I’ll believe it when they lower prices, not when they change the buzzwords.
