Palm City, Fla. — A semi-truck hauling tires slammed into a bridge on the Florida Turnpike, leaving heavy damage and shutting down both directions of the roadway.
Martin County Fire Rescue said the northbound and southbound lanes were closed after the truck struck the bridge. The incident triggered a response from Martin County Fire Rescue and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver suffered minor injuries but refused transport to a hospital, according to firefighters.
Firefighters later conducted a more detailed inspection and found minor cracking on one of the bridge’s support pillars. Martin County Fire Rescue said all lanes remained closed “out of an abundance of caution” while Florida Highway Patrol engineers investigate what happened.
The closure comes after another recent bridge-related crash in Palm City. CBS12 reported in March that a dump truck hit the Citrus Boulevard overpass above I-95, leading to a shutdown of all southbound lanes on the interstate.
For drivers heading through the area now, the message from emergency crews was clear: the road would stay closed while engineers assess the bridge and determine whether it can safely reopen.

All lanes closed?? That’s crazy.
So the truck driver refused hospital transport but they’re still shutting the whole turnpike down? I don’t get it. Also tires on a bridge sounds like it should’ve been prevented somehow.
Wait minor cracking on the support pillar and it’s both directions off?? Sounds like they’re overreacting unless the bridge is like, totally compromised. Reminds me of that Citrus Blvd thing—every time it’s Palm City the bridges get wrecked.
Florida keeps letting heavy trucks go under old bridges like it’s fine. The driver “minor injuries” but “out of an abundance of caution” means it’ll be closed for days, mark my words. Also why was it hauling tires… like shouldn’t those be strapped better or something? I’m just saying, seems like construction/maintenance issues.
