Pensacola marks Juneteenth with food, family, freedom

Juneteenth celebrations – From a whole hog feast to church-led festivities and a gallery stretch of art vendors, Pensacola’s Juneteenth season is built around family tables, shared culture, and the promise that finally reached enslaved people in 1865.

The first thing many people taste during Juneteenth in Pensacola isn’t just smoked meat — it’s the weight of the story behind it.

On June 13. Aaron Watson. a Pensacola attorney and founder of the Watson Firm. will sit down with his community to mark Juneteenth with family. food and music. The fifth annual Juneteenth “A Family Reunion for the Culture” celebration runs from noon to 6 p.m. at Museum Plaza, 300 S. Tarragona St. The event is free and packed with activities: live entertainment and presentations. a sweet potato pie contest. domino and spades tournaments. line dancing. an award ceremony. games. vendors. food trucks and more.

Watson’s reason for celebrating is simple, and personal. “Those people on the farms and the plantations, they learned that if they have to work, now they’re going to have to pay you,” he said. “I can only imagine that experience, to realize you’re no longer a slave. It’s a cause for celebration.”
