Sanders shrugs off QB talk as Browns delay decision
With the Browns still without a determined starting quarterback after Todd Monken’s spring decision hopes, Shedeur Sanders says he isn’t trying to judge where he stands—only to keep improving as the competition carries into training camp.
The quarterback race in Cleveland isn’t being settled the way Browns head coach Todd Monken said he wanted it to be.
Monken had repeatedly expressed this offseason that he hoped to decide on a starting quarterback by the end of the team’s spring practices. This week, he acknowledged that no determination has been made. That leaves Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders still building their cases. with the competition expected to roll into training camp this summer.
On Wednesday, Sanders was asked where he felt things stood in the process. He declined to map out any timeline or gauge the current pecking order.
“I don’t think I’m a judge. I’m not a judge,” Sanders said.
Sanders also framed the way he’s approaching the job in personal terms rather than outcome terms. He understands the outside focus is on who will win the starting role, but he said he’s deliberately turning his attention elsewhere as he prepares for his second NFL season.
“That’s nothing I’m focused on,” Sanders said. “I’m focused on developing as a player, doing everything, getting as comfortable as I can in the offense and the scheme and playing with confidence. That’s all I’m really looking for and trying to improve every day.”
For now, that mindset is where Sanders says he’s anchored himself—continuing to work with the expectation that the answers will come on their own schedule.
Sanders said he will keep preparing that way, adding that things will “fall into place” at some point ahead of the regular schedule.
Shedeur Sanders Deshaun Watson Browns quarterback competition Todd Monken training camp spring practices NFL
So basically they’re still clueless who’s starting? Love that for the Browns.
I don’t get why everyone’s acting like it’s a mystery. If Watson is there then it should’ve been decided already. Maybe they’re just stalling for headlines.
Shedeur saying “I’m not a judge” sounds like he’s trying to dodge the question. Like bro, you’re literally in a QB race lol. But I guess if he focuses on “development” that’s what they want to hear.
I swear QB decisions get delayed every year in Cleveland like it’s a tradition. Todd Monken wanted it by spring practices and then suddenly “no determination”?? Sounds like the scheme isn’t ready or the locker room is a mess. Also Shedeur talking about confidence… ok but doesn’t that mean he’s not ready yet? idk.
