A 17-year-old boy from Brockton was taken into custody Monday after Boston police received reports of gunfire in Hyde Park, a response that began around 3:40 p.m. near Hyde Park Avenue and Milton Street.
Police said three shots were fired and callers reported seeing multiple juveniles fleeing the area. One juvenile male, described as wearing a black hoodie, was seen running down Hyde Park Avenue. Officers searched the vicinity and eventually found the 17-year-old behind an auto body shop.
Police said the teen was located crouched behind bushes in a wooded area and was allegedly “scrambling and rummaging” through nearby brush. After detaining him, officers spotted a firearm about three feet from where he was taken into custody. Boston police said the gun was covered in leaves and vines.
The weapon was recovered and identified as a Rock Island Armory .45-caliber handgun.
The teen’s name has not been released due to his age. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court on charges including carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card.
Boston police have not charged the teen with firing the weapon. and the department did not specify whether investigators believe he discharged the shots reported Monday afternoon. A BPD spokesperson told Boston.com that the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine who fired the shots.
