Robert Downey Jr. Fires Up a Sequel Push 15 Years Later

Robert Downey – Fifteen years after Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes made a blockbuster out of a classic detective, fans and stars alike are still talking about a third mystery—especially after Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ended by setting up more to come.

When the murders started in London. it felt like Sherlock Holmes had stepped out of the books and into something faster. sharper. and more dangerous. That energy is exactly why Guy Ritchie’s 2009 take on the detective still hits—so many years later—that people are now counting down a sequel season of their own.

Ritchie previously helmed Sherlock Holmes. an action-packed re-imagining that he shaped quite loosely on the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The film starred Robert Downey Jr. in the leading role and became an instant reference point for how the character could look and move when dressed as a period action hero. In the years since. fans have continued to hold tightly to the re-imagining and its sequel. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows—and they want a third mystery to spring afoot.

What made the first movie feel so fresh wasn’t that it leaned on any single Sherlock Holmes story. Instead. the 2009 triumph crafted a new mystery in the spirit of Doyle’s originals and poured it into Ritchie’s action-oriented style. In Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock and his partner, Dr. John Watson (Jude Law). investigate a new string of murders across London tied to the notorious (and supposedly deceased) Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong). Blackwood’s claims—that he possesses supernatural abilities—turn him into a local legend. and the case drags Holmes and Watson all around the city. As the investigation tightens. there’s more than meets the eye about Blackwood—and about Holmes’ flirtatious adversary Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams). who finds herself in the middle of the action.

Ritchie’s version didn’t just change the scale. It also spotlighted a specific detail from Doyle’s work: Sherlock Holmes’ love of boxing. That small element became a springboard, helping turn the slim-and-stoic detective into the center of incredibly well-stylized fight sequences. With Ritchie’s stylish appeal and Downey’s performance as the literary hero. the film landed as a hit that “nobody could have seen coming.”.

The pull for another round didn’t start out of nowhere. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ends by not just adapting “The Final Problem” and hinting at “The Adventure of the Empty House. ” but by teasing that there are more mysteries to be solved by Holmes and Watson. Since Holmes outsmarted Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) at the Reichenbach Falls. audiences have been clamoring for Ritchie to reunite with his leading stars for a third outing—one that again aims to surprise with carefully crafted twists and turns.

Downey and Law have repeatedly expressed their willingness to reprise their roles, and Ritchie has remained devoted to this interpretation of the literary characters even as he went on to helm Young Sherlock, a Prime Video project that is, seemingly, unrelated.

With all of that—an ending built to open doors. stars signaling they’d come back. and a detective reimagined into action cinema—it’s hard to shake the feeling that 15 years after the first punch was thrown. the story still isn’t finished. The question isn’t whether another mystery could work. It’s whether it’s finally going to arrive.

  1. Wait so they’re actually making another one? I thought after 15 years it was just talk. Holmes is basically immortal lol.

  2. Downey Jr fires up a sequel push but isn’t this the one where everyone died or got stuck in London or whatever. I stopped following after the last trailer. Guess we’ll see.

  3. I’m confused though because I thought Guy Ritchie already said no more Sherlock after Game of Shadows. Also Mark Strong being in it like, does he come back again? The article says third mystery and then jumps around.

  4. 15 years later and people are still counting down… kinda wild. I always thought it shouldve done a “supernatural” angle more like the book, but then they made it action first. Irene Adler was the best part and if Rachel McAdams isn’t involved then I’m not buying it.
