The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool looked almost different by Monday—clearer, less “pea-soup” green from earlier in the week—yet the work around it still raised alarms.
In the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July. the nearly $16 million renovation has attracted criticism after algal blooms left the water looking swampy. On Monday. July 22. the pool’s green tint appeared to be fading from above the Lincoln Memorial. and the water glistened with a reflection of the Washington Monument as renovation work continued. The corners told a more complicated story. with high algae levels still visible even as conditions appeared to improve in other spots.
This uneven shift in the pool’s color is unfolding as law enforcement investigates Reflecting Pool “vandalism.” In a Truth Social post. President Donald Trump blamed vandals for troubles that have cropped up after the renovation and said he had “inspected” the Reflecting Pool. adding that repair work would “begin immediately.”.
The dispute over what’s happened has centered on two different explanations—algae treatment on one hand. and alleged damage by people on the other. The Department of the Interior had previously said it deployed nanobubbler technology to kill the algae. Separately, videos earlier this month showed workers pouring 12% hydrogen peroxide into the pool.
On June 15. the Department of the Interior confirmed it would be using hydrogen peroxide to treat the pool and said the chemical is a milder treatment than chlorine. The statement also said there are “no harmful side effects to marine life or to the environment.” By Monday. both baby and adult ducks were seen wading in the water.
Even with that reassurance, the pool has remained a flashpoint. On Sunday. June 21. a duckling was spotted dead in the water. and the next day. significant cracking in the new “American Flag Blue” basin lining was visible. The cause of the duckling’s death is undetermined, but it sparked concern among onlookers.
National Guardsmen and other authorities were on scene to stop “vandals” from taking pieces of the peeling lining. Surveillance equipment was also spotted alongside the pool.
Over the weekend, Trump said on Truth Social that several people had been arrested after sticking their hands in the pool and trying to strip the blue polyurea for themselves.
Trump’s claims stretch further back. In a June 19 Truth Social post. he accused unknown assailants of pouring a chemical into the Reflecting Pool “to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work.” In the same post. Trump said. “We’ve cleaned. renovated. and beautified over 45 Monuments and Memorials. 28 Statues and 22 Fountains in Washington. D.C. Things are looking really good in our Nation’s Capital.” He then returned to the Reflecting Pool. writing that “we’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool. which sits between The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial.”.
The sequence of events is now hard to miss: algae appears to be retreating in some sections while other corners still show heavy growth. and at the same time the pool’s new lining has drawn attention for cracking and peeling. With hydrogen peroxide and nanobubbler technology on one side and law enforcement activity tied to suspected tampering on the other. the renovation’s public-facing image has become a tug-of-war over cause and accountability—played out in plain sight. as visitors look down into water that’s never quite the same twice.
By Monday. the visual evidence of change was clear enough to notice from the Lincoln Memorial steps—clearer water in the middle. stubborn green in the corners—and officials were still dealing with the aftermath of the weekend’s allegations of vandalism and the earlier reports of damage. The Department of the Interior had been contacted for additional information about the renovations.
