Fans question Spider-Man combo container’s design and use

Spider-Man combo – Cinemark rolled out limited-edition Spider-Man: Brand New Day popcorn and drink merchandise ahead of the July 31 release, but fans on Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and the Spider-Man subreddit are fixated on what they see as a “not safe for work” look and, more pr
For a popcorn bucket, it’s supposed to do one simple thing: hold popcorn. Instead, Cinemark’s newest Spider-Man promotional release has turned into a debate about design, function, and what fans think has gotten out of hand.
Ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release on July 31. Cinemark posted photos of limited-edition merchandise seen during the studio’s promotional push at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Among the items: a Spider-Man Combo Container. with a popcorn bucket and drink cup featuring Spider-Man’s iconic hand gesture and a web-shooter coming from the wrist.
But as soon as the photos hit social media, fans began scrutinizing the look. One Instagram user said. “No one actually thought about the cup. I see.” A TikTok user. Rupert Baxter. posted a video arguing the conversation might not be about engineering popcorn storage at all. saying. “What do I know?. Never designed a popcorn bucket in my life, but maybe this is the conversation they wanted us to have.”.
Others shifted from the aesthetics to what the container is meant to be for. Fans posting on the Spider-Man subreddit raised concerns that the combo container doesn’t appear to hold much popcorn and that these promotional buckets have become too elaborate for their own good.
One Reddit user wrote that the bucket looks awkward to use. saying: “Putting the suggestiveness aside. this looks like a shitty popcorn bucket. It looks like it can fit like three popcorn and looks super awkward to actually hold.” Another user said. “I’m so tired of these novelty ‘buckets.’ We’ve lost the plot. Almost none of them even resemble popcorn buckets anymore. Just release high-quality merch instead of these plastic dust collectors.”.
The backlash lands in a broader pattern fans say they’ve watched for a while. These days. nearly every blockbuster has at least one over-the-top popcorn bucket that goes viral on social media for its design. selling out instantly online. Fans point to the hype that began in 2024 with the iconic Dune Part Two bucket—designed to look like a sandworm. requiring users to put their hands through the sandworm’s mouth to reach inside for popcorn.
Today, the Dune bucket is listed for anywhere between $40 and $360 on resale sites like eBay.
How Cinemark’s Spider-Man merchandise will roll out
Cinemark’s merchandise will be available for purchase in theaters soon. As of June 22, the release date for the viral popcorn bucket had yet to be shared.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day merchandise collection doesn’t stop at the combo container. Cinemark’s announced lineup includes a 32-ounce Spider-Man bottle. a blanket. a popcorn tub with a Spider-Man lid. and a popcorn tin and cup combo—plus a more traditional pairing with illustrations wrapped around the sides.
For fans watching the transaction from the comment section, the question now isn’t just whether the merchandise will sell out. It’s whether the next “viral bucket” will be judged more on how it looks on camera—or on whether it works the way a popcorn bucket is supposed to.

Why is a popcorn bucket even “not safe for work” lol
They’re literally holding popcorn, not launching a rocket. People are bored and gotta complain about something.
I don’t get how a web shooting wrist thing is suggestive? Like maybe my brain just skips over it. Also if it only holds like 3 pieces of popcorn that’s a ripoff, straight up.
Cinemark really said “let’s make the cup do more than hold a drink” and then acted surprised people notice the design. I saw the pic and first thing I thought was it’s gonna be hard to carry, like the wrist-web part sticks out weird. Also these promo things always look cool until you get it and realize it’s basically plastic garbage. It’s like they’re turning movie snacks into a debate about cartoons… and then charging premium for it.
