When the Quarry 2 Wildfire kept spreading through west Miami-Dade County, the smoke didn’t stay put. Residents nearby could see or smell it as firefighters continued suppression efforts and wind conditions shifted.

The Florida Forest Service said the brush fire has grown to 600 acres since it started on Monday afternoon. In an updated map of active wildfires released at 12:40 a.m. on June 16, the fire was listed as having burned 600 acres and being 30% contained.

On the ground, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service responded to a First Alarm grass fire near NW 137 Ave. and NW 41 St. at 2:56 p.m. on June 15. Firefighters encountered “large columns of smoke in the area,” according to MDFR. No injuries have been reported.

The fire’s footprint and lingering hotspots also remain part of the picture. A fire at NW 137th Ave. and NW 25th St. was still listed on Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Active Calls page as of 8:53 on June 16.

Broward County faces an added health risk. The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for Broward County due to “near surface smoke” from the Quarry 2 Fire. The alert is set to last through 12 p.m. on June 16.

The NWS warned that exposure to air pollutants—including “particulate matter and ground-level ozone”—can bring headaches. difficulty breathing. chest pain. asthma attacks. fatigue. increased coughing. and irritation of the eyes. throat. and sinuses. It recommended monitoring local air quality and cutting back on outdoor activities if you are “unusually sensitive to particle pollution.”.

In the same swath of South Florida where visibility and air quality are changing, motorists have also been dealing with unexpected slowdowns. The Doral Police Department said in a social media post that a “large brush fire” was impacting local traffic conditions on Monday.

According to the post, power outages caused traffic signals to stop functioning at NW 107 Ave. and NW 41 St., as well as at NW 102 Ave. and NW 41 St. Officers were “on-site directing traffic. ” and the department advised drivers to navigate carefully. plan for delays. and use alternate routes if available.

The sequence is clear: the fire’s growth and shifting conditions are driving both public safety steps and downstream impacts. As the Quarry 2 Fire remains active—600 acres burned and only 30% contained—smoke has spread far enough to trigger a Broward air quality alert and disrupt roadways through signal outages.

As of the latest updates provided for June 16, crews are still working the scene while local agencies continue to track active calls and manage traffic in affected areas.

  1. 30% contained sounds like it’s basically still going wild? Like if it’s only 30% then shouldn’t everyone be evacuated or whatever. Also why is it taking so long with the wind shifting.

  2. Wait so it started Monday afternoon but they were called 2:56 p.m. June 15?? I’m confused by the dates. And the smoke wasn’t staying put so that’s why the air alert is for Broward right, even though it’s Miami-Dade?

  3. This is exactly why people should stop cutting trees and then act surprised. But also I feel like they always say “no injuries reported” right until someone posts a TikTok about feeling sick. If you got asthma you’re probably cooked today, just saying. I’m gonna keep my windows closed even though half the time they still smell it anyway.
