Pulisic’s calf injury clouds USA’s Australia lineup Friday

Seattle — The question hanging over the U.S. men’s national team on the eve of Friday’s game against Australia isn’t about tactics or talent. It’s about whether Christian Pulisic’s left calf will hold up.

Pulisic was sensational in the USMNT’s World Cup opener against Paraguay on Friday, June 12, in a 4-1 win. But he was forced to leave the match at halftime after injuring his left calf, and the uncertainty has only grown since.

In all four days of U.S. training this week, Pulisic has not been able to fully participate. He has instead done gym sessions and individual work on the field, wearing a sleeve over his calf. That routine left his status in major doubt as the team prepared for Australia.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged the picture is still not settled. “He’s evolving. He’s much better from Friday,” Pochettino said on Thursday at his pre-game press conference. “We will see. If he is not available for tomorrow, he will be available for the next game.”

When asked about how hard it is to manage an injury like this during a tight schedule, Pochettino said, “When this type of thing happens, always it’s painful. Christian is strong and with a great mentality.” He added that Pulisic is “doing a fantastic effort to try and be ready as soon as possible.”

The U.S. does have a cushion that could allow for caution. Because it collected all three points in the opener, resting Pulisic against Australia is a realistic possibility. Still. the 27-year-old is one of the team’s most irreplaceable players. and his absence would likely change the rhythm of the U.S. attack — giving Australia a chance it might not otherwise get.

Pulisic described how the injury happened after the Paraguay match. explaining he was kicked in the left calf during the opener and left at halftime of the 4-1 victory. In postgame interviews. he said. “Bit of a kick in the first half. so I’m really hoping that it’s nothing.” He added that the decision to take precautions was already underway: “Taking a little bit of precaution today. but I’m hoping I’ll be fine. Just the back of my leg. sort of my calf area. but I’ve had similar things before. and staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything.”.

Pochettino, speaking after the Paraguay game as well, said it was a last-minute decision and that the team was rushing to handle the substitution. “Hope it’s not a big issue,” he said in his postgame news conference.

If Pulisic can’t play in Seattle, the U.S. has multiple attacking options. Tim Weah, who came off the bench against Paraguay, is an obvious candidate, though the personnel shift would be meaningful. Weah plays more as a winger than Pulisic. who tends to float inside and find space between the opposition’s midfield and defense.

Pochettino could also start Gio Reyna. Reyna had a standout cameo against Paraguay that included a last-gasp goal with the outside of his foot. Still. Reyna would be a different kind of answer than Pulisic: Pochettino’s playmaker uses guile and technical ability to break down defenses rather than the dynamism Pulisic brings.

Other attacking options include Alejandro Zendejas, Haji Wright, and Brenden Aaronson. None of them saw the field against Paraguay, but Zendejas and Aaronson are options who can replicate key parts of Pulisic’s game, including the ability to drive at defenders and put them under pressure.

The schedule adds pressure in the background, even as the injury decision is still being worked out in real time. The U.S. World Cup run begins with June 12: USA def. Paraguay, 4-1. The next match is June 19: USA vs Australia at 3 p.m. ET at Lumen Field in Seattle on FOX. Then comes June 25: USA vs Turkey at 10 p.m. ET at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., also on FOX.

For now, though, everything points back to one moment from June 12 — a kick to the left calf, a halftime exit, and four days of partial participation. In a tournament defined by margins, Pulisic’s next step on the field — or his absence — will determine what the U.S. can ask of its attack on Friday.
